Hiring range for this position is $54,371.20- $65,000.00. Initial placement for new employees is customarily at entry level through 35% percentile. Pay grade for this position is 20.


General Definition of Work:

Performs intermediate professional work overseeing and managing the coordination and delivery of community-based health promotion and behavior modification programs targeting the modifiable risk factors of inactivity, poor eating habits, injury and chronic disease management/prevention and tobacco use. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Assistant Director. Supervision is exercised over staff and volunteers.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
Coordinating and presenting public health education, fitness and/or related wellness programs, to older adults, youth, and other targeted community members in a variety of settings including but not limited to senior centers, Parks, LunchPlus Club sites, community centers and other organizations.

  • Assists in the collection and management of data; perform outcomes analysis of data; and preparation of reports.
  • Coordinates and implements promotional activities, within established program guidelines, based on interpretation of needs and desires of target groups.
  • Teaches health education, fitness and behavior modification classes as needed in various settings.
  • Works with participants to ensure that they are achieving their program goals and provides feedback and progress reports.
  • Schedules and conducts baseline health and fitness assessments; develops action plans and goal setting, and provides ongoing risk reduction and health promotion counseling to participants.
  • Implements individualized and group health promotion programs for participants populations and targeted community groups.
  • Instructs and monitors participants regarding safe exercise principles and technique when participating in the departmental or program sponsored events; makes corrections as needed.
  • Responsible for hiring, supervising, training and evaluating instructors.
  • Schedules and enters payroll for instructors including arranging substitutes and alternate class space on a regular basis.
  • Assists in the development and evaluation of health and fitness systems; including nutrition, physical activity, and tobacco related materials and procedures.
  • Coordinates local Health and Wellness Expo and various health education events, fairs and event booths.
  • Participates in special projects.
  • Trains community health advocates in specific behavior modification modules on physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco related materials.
  • Applies basic evaluation skills to measure effectiveness of health education initiatives and methodologies within the area of assignment using surveys and various techniques such as administering pre/post-test.
  • Oversee fitness center equipment including inspections and preventative maintenance.
  • Serves on County, Community and Health Alliance committees as appropriate.
  • Supervises interns assigned to wellness programming.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the practices and procedures of behavior modifications and wellness programs; thorough knowledge of methods and techniques used in preparing and disseminating educational information and programs; through knowledge of techniques involved in preparing graphic materials, exhibits and visual aids; working knowledge of office equipment and computers and applicable software applications; knowledge of hiring, training, evaluating, and supervising volunteers, instructors, and other personnel; ability to present ideas effectively both orally and in writing; ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, educational and community organizations and associates; and ability to attend work regularly.

Minimum Education / Experience requirements

Education and Experience:

Requires graduation from an appropriately accredited college or university with major course work in health education, recreation, exercise science, or related field and some experience in public health, recreation, and wellness programs. Supervisory experience preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.


Special Requirements:

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Possession of CPR and first aid certification. Must have ability to work a flexible schedule; requires some before and after hours and weekends. Preferred Certifications: ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist, Certified Personal Trainer, and NETA Senior Fitness Certification within 6 months of employment. Position is a safety-sensitive position as defined by the Drug Free Workplace Policy.


Physical Requirements:

This is normally light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires standing and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
