Job Summary:
The CAD Engineer plays a critical role in supporting the Sales, Operations, and Engineering teams by creating clear, detailed, and precise documentation for both proposed installations and final as-built systems using CAD and BIM software. This position focuses on Telecommunications and Low Voltage Systems, including Structured Cabling, AV, Security, Access Control, and DAS.
This role will also be responsible for assisting with pre-sales designs, active construction documentation, and closeout packages to ensure accuracy and compliance with industry standards. The role also includes submitting plans for permits as needed, ensuring all project documentation aligns with local and national codes. The CAD Engineer will work closely with Account Managers, Project Managers, Engineers, Estimators, and Field Teams to streamline project execution and improve efficiency. This is an in-office position and requires hands-on collaboration with cross-functional teams.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
Design & Documentation
- Develop detailed 2D and 3D designs using AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM Modeling Software for low-voltage and structured cabling systems.
- Prepare submittal drawings, schematics, system layouts, rack elevations, and engineering documentation for installation teams.
- Assist in pre-sales support, providing conceptual and preliminary drawings to aid in the bidding and proposal process.
- Support As-Built documentation development, ensuring all field changes and updates are reflected accurately in final project deliverables.
- Maintain revision control of design documents to ensure accuracy throughout the project lifecycle.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with Account Managers, Project Managers, Sales Engineers, and Superintendents to ensure alignment between design intent and field execution.
- Coordinate with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors to ensure compatibility with project requirements and technical specifications.
- Simplify and communicate complex technical details for customers, sales teams, and installation technicians.
- Ensure accurate documentation of all customer and vendor interactions, including dates, names, and concise summaries.
Process & Quality Control
- Assist in the development and standardization of CAD & BIM best practices within the company.
- Ensure all drawings and system designs comply with industry codes, safety regulations, and customer requirements.
- Perform quality control checks on designs and installation packages to verify compliance with contract documents.
- Stay updated on emerging trends in CAD, BIM, and low-voltage system design to improve project efficiency and accuracy.
Job Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Proficiency in AutoCAD & BIM Modeling (Revit preferred).
- Ability to create accurate and efficient 2D and 3D system designs.
- Experience with layering techniques, model geometries, and construction documentation.
- Strong understanding of telecommunications and low-voltage systems, including:
- Structured cabling, fiber optic networks, and MPO connectivity.
- Audio-visual (AV) design for commercial environments.
- Security, access control, and DAS system layouts.
- Pre-sales and Post-sales Engineering Support.
- Ability to read and interpret RFPs, blueprints, and technical documentation.
- Work closely with estimating teams to support competitive bidding efforts.
- Strong analytical skills and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve design conflicts before field installation.
- Familiarity with clash detection and coordination processes in BIM environments.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to convey technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience working within project management software such as Procore or Autodesk Construction Cloud (preferred).
- Ability to travel occasionally for site visits, field verifications, and design coordination meetings.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
- Minimum 3 years of experience in CAD drafting for telecommunications, structured cabling, or low-voltage systems.
- Industry certifications (BICSI, RCDD, or CDCDP) are a plus.
- Experience with Revit, Navisworks, or other 3D BIM coordination tools is highly desirable.
Work Environment:
- This is an on-site position, with no remote work option due to the need for close collaboration with project teams.
- Work will be performed in a professional office setting, with occasional travel to project sites for field verification and coordination.
- Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
