What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-time Community Organizing Intern position at Cabrini Immigrant Services of New York City?
Cabrini Immigrant Services of NYC (CIS-NYC) is a community-based organization that provides a broad range of culturally and linguistically appropriate services to immigrants, refugees, asylees, and their families. The Community Organizing Intern will collaborate closely with community leaders and agency staff to assist in coordination of the Justice for Immigrants program (JFI). JFI is a community-led popular education and civic engagement initiative that exists to empower, educate, and involve immigrant families as active agents of change regardless of their immigration status. The Community Organizing Intern will work closely with the Community Organizer and reports directly to the Community Organizer. Their responsibilities will include the following:
- Conduct community outreach and engagement within the Washington Heights neighborhood.
- Develop relationships with local community members and engage in one-on-one conversations with potential community leaders.
- Support the Community Organizer with coordinating and conducting Know Your Rights workshops and membership meetings.
- Conduct outreach for meetings and workshops (including phone calls, emails, and social media).
- Provide support with maintenance of program databases (Nationbuilder and spreadsheets).
- Assist with coordination of involvement in relevant campaigns. This may include: attendance at actions and press conferences, phone banking, petitions, lobby days, etc.
- Other tasks and projects as needed.
Education/certification, knowledge, skills and abilities required:
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice and immigrant rights
- Team-work oriented and ability to work collaboratively
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Fluency in Spanish and at minimum conversational level of English required
- Computer skills, including: Word processing, databases, Excel and PowerPoint.
Hours:
- 12 hours per week / 5 months (with possibility of extension)
- Ability to work some evenings and weekends
- Availability on Monday and Thursday evenings (6-8pm) strongly desired
- In person (on and off site)
