Position Overview:
The Youth and Community Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing and managing youth-focused urban farming programs, including Grow Detroit’s Young Talent (GDYT), 4-H, and other related initiatives. This role will involve supervising day-to-day program operations, ensuring engaging and educational experiences for participants, and supporting the development of skills in urban farming and sustainability. The coordinator will report to the Executive Co-Director of Strategic Partnerships, Operations, and Fundraising. The Youth and Community Coordinator is a full time, non exempt, hourly role, paying $16.82 per hour for 40 hours per week.
Key Responsibilities:
- Program Management:
- Supervise, mentor, and support youth participants across various programs, including Grow Detroit’s Young Talent, 4-H, and other youth initiatives.
- Develop, plan, and implement educational activities, workshops, and hands-on learning experiences that align with Cadillac Urban Gardens' mission and goals.
- Ensure programs run smoothly and participants receive adequate support, guidance, and resources.
- Track and evaluate program effectiveness, including participant attendance, engagement, and outcomes, and provide regular reports to leadership.
- Collaboration and Coordination:
- Work closely with the Co-Executive Director of Youth, Community, and Research to ensure programs align with organizational goals and strategic initiatives.
- Collaborate with the Garden Manager to integrate urban agriculture and gardening activities into youth programs.
- Build and maintain relationships with schools, community organizations, and other stakeholders to expand program outreach and impact.
- Curriculum and Activity Development:
- Design and adapt curricula that engage youth in sustainable farming, nutrition, environmental education, and community-building activities.
- Foster leadership and teamwork skills among youth participants, encouraging them to take active roles within the programs.
- Provide experiential learning opportunities that connect youth with nature, food production, and environmental stewardship.
- Support identification and development of program related grant applications.
- Youth Engagement and Support:
- Develop strong relationships with youth participants to create a supportive and inclusive program environment.
- Communicate regularly with participants' families and guardians, providing updates on progress and addressing any concerns.
- Foster an environment that encourages youth empowerment, personal growth, and community involvement.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 18 years of age
- A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in youth program management, preferably in a nonprofit, educational, or community-based setting.
- Experience in urban agriculture, community gardening, or related fields is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of youth development principles, program design, and best practices.
- Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple programs and tasks simultaneously in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate diverse groups of young people.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Passion for youth empowerment, food justice, environmental sustainability, and community development.
