Summary :
The Public Works Director is the Cahuilla Band of Indians (CBOI)- Tribal Administration’s focal point for managing the construction and public work affairs of Cahuilla Band of Indians tribal government. Provide professional construction and project direction, grants management, financial reporting, as well as managing the daily operations of the Public Works Department. This includes strategic planning, systems control, reporting, resource allocation, and execution. The Public Works Director extends responsibility for ensuring adequate internal controls are established to safeguard the assets of the Tribe. This role will direct the team with planning and maintenance of several buildings, parks & grounds, utilities, facilities, equipment maintenance and requests, and projects within the tribe.
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Program and Policy Development :
Develop and sustain long-term programs that enhance the community.
Oversee tribal road maintenance and daily operations of equipment rental requests.
Prepare grant submissions for public works projects.
Develop protocols for hiring outside vendors.
Monitor the progress of staff, providing guidance and alternate work plans as needed.
Produce reports and technical papers for public works projects.

Typical Physical Demands :
Work requires sitting, lifting, reaching, walking, and lifting to 50-100 pounds. Also requires manual dexterity to operate office equipment, keyboarding, copiers, etc.

This position uses judgement in identifying and selecting the most appropriate procedures to use, or in determining which of several established alternatives to use. It regularly requires verbally expressing or exchanging ideas of important instructions accurately and quickly. There may be time pressure regarding deadline-driven initiatives and tasks.
Working Conditions :
The working conditions for a Public Works and Construction Director for a tribal government can be quite dynamic and involve a mix of office and field work. Primarily office-based for planning and administrative tasks, however it also involves site visits and fieldwork to inspect projects. Local travel within the tribal territory for project oversight and meetings with stakeholders.
