Maintenance & Engineering Manager
Lead Innovation & Operational Excellence in a Dynamic Mill Environment
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Maintenance & Engineering Manager to oversee the maintenance of our paper mills, steam plant, and yard activities at the Madawaska Mill, as well as engineering operations at both the Madawaska, Maine Paper Mill and the Edmundston, New Brunswick Pulp Mill. This role is an excellent opportunity for a results-driven leader to drive efficiency, safety, and continuous improvement across our operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Champion Safety & Compliance – Actively promote a culture of safety by engaging in safety activities, conducting audits and inspections, and ensuring all employees follow safe work practices.
- Strategic Leadership & Collaboration – Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure effective communication, alignment of goals, and operational excellence.
- Budgeting & Cost Optimization – Develop and manage the annual budget, track performance, and identify opportunities for cost reduction and operational efficiencies.
- Engineering & Maintenance Excellence – Oversee engineering standards, design processes, CAD systems, and the maintenance of critical mill infrastructure to maximize reliability and efficiency.
- Capital Investment & Project Management – Lead the development and execution of 1- and 3-year capital investment programs, secure funding, and manage project performance.
- Employee Development & Performance Management – Mentor and develop engineers, supervisors, and staff through coaching, training, and performance management.
- Union & Labor Relations – Foster strong working relationships with unionized personnel and ensure compliance with labor agreements.
- Operational Oversight – Participate in key meetings, including safety, project reviews, production, contractor performance, and business strategy. Provide operational leadership on designated weekends as part of a rotation schedule.
What We’re Looking For:
- 10 years of experience in the pulp and paper industry with a strong background in maintenance, engineering, and operations.
- Certified Professional Engineer (PE) or equivalent experience preferred.
- Proven leadership skills in managing salaried and hourly employees, ensuring clear communication and strategic alignment.
- Expertise in capital project execution, budget management, and cost optimization.
- Strong technical proficiency in engineering processes, CAD standards, and project verification systems.
- Ability to thrive in a mill environment, balancing office-based strategic planning (70%) with on-site operational support (30%).
