ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY

 

ABOUT THE DISCOVERY CAMPS:

The Discovery Camps are comprised of Science, Robotics, Computer, Imagination, Horse, Entrepreneurship and Fashion Tech camps. They serve kids and young adults from local school districts (ages 5-14). They are offered by the SEES program in the College of Science, the Arabian Horse Center, Student Innovation Idea Lab and the Department of Apparel Merchandising & Management (AMM). Discovery Camp activities are exercise- and project-based, in the areas of their specialties. SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety):

The counselor positions being advertised in this ad are for Science, Robotics, Computer, and Imagination camps only. The Horse, Entrepreneurship, and Fashion Tech counselors are hired by the Arabian Horse Center, Student iLab, and AMM, respectively. Counselors work under supervision by the Camp Director and work with groups of approximately 6-10 campers daily. Camp Counselors are responsible for facilitating and supervising a wide array of fun activities geared specifically for campers, as well as ensuring the safety and well-being of camp participants. A variety of camps and activities are made available to counselors for their selection. Camp assignments are made on a weekly basis. Term: June 2 through July 25, 2025. Note: students cannot be camp counselors if they are taking classes that conflict with camp hours.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Provide direct supervision for 6-10 campers daily
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of campers
  • Implement and monitor daily activities for campers; support and encourage camper involvement
  • Communicate with parents regarding camp activities
  • Attend pre-camp training, first aid/CPR training and meetings as required
  • Stay abreast of problems and/or concerns and provide ongoing updates to the Camp Director.
  • Communicate with Camp Director in the overall facilitation of camp activities, as needed
  • Perform other camp-related duties as assigned

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Age: Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Education: Currently enrolled Cal Poly Pomona student OR recent graduate
  • Experience: Prior experience working with children, preferably in a camp or school setting is preferred, but not required

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously
  • Ability to effectively supervise children and children's activities
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail, and make timely, well-thought out decisions
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model for children
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with co-counselors, campers and parents
  • Ability to remain calm and composed during stressful situations
  • Ability to develop and implement well-organized projects and activities
  • Ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse environment

Additional Knowledge and Abilities for Computer or Robotics Camp Counselors:

  • Comfort with beginner-level programming (very low level; object oriented
  • No engineering is involved in either camp

 

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is typically performed in both an indoor, temperature controlled and outdoor non-temperature controlled work environment in potentially warm weather conditions. Ability to work effectively under pressure required. Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, campers, and parents of campers required.

BACKGROUND CHECKS

  • Camp counselors are required to undergo a background check through the Cal Poly Pomona Police Department. Background checks are done through the Live Scan system to identify misdemeanors, felonies, predatory behavior, FBI records checks and Department of Justice cross reference.
