THE DEPARTMENT:

The Dean's Office in the College of Science is responsible for the administration of academic and ancillary programs supporting the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Computer Sciences, Geological Sciences, Kinesiology & Health Promotion, Mathematics & Statistics, and Physics & Astronomy, as well as the Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (CEMaST), the Science Educational Enhancement Services (SEES), and an Advising Center. At present, the College of Science has over 4,400 undergraduate and graduate students and approximately 130 tenure-track or tenured faculty. The College is committed to excellence in teaching and scholarship and is the largest recipient of external funding on campus.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


STUDENT SUCCESS

  • Provide leadership within the college and work with the College Advising Center, SEES, BASES, WiSE, Office of Student Success, and Career Center to support student success and graduation. Develop timely and actionable reports to track student progression and provide appropriate support services.
  • The College is dedicated to providing a range of services with metrics that are designed to increase persistence and graduation rates, eliminate equity gaps, and successfully launch students into their careers.

STUDENT-RELATED MATTERS

  • Evaluate student petitions and appeals; help manage student-related events (e.g., recruitment, orientation, commencement); maintain communication with student clubs; help manage student scholarship process, review student travel requests requiring dean/provost approval, work with chairs to address student academic issues, and act as a liaison with the Office of Student Success and Student Affairs.

STUDENT ASSISTANTS

  • As HEERA manger for student employees (>150 SA/ISAs), oversee student hiring process; review and approve monthly student payroll (state-funded, federal work study); and liaise with HR on issues.

BUDGET AND FINANCE

  • Work with the Dean's leadership team to help manage state-side budgeting for student assistants (SAs) and instructional student assistants (ISAs) that support teaching laboratories, supply rooms, department offices, course grading, etc.
  • Help track allocation of student scholarship funding and disbursement of funds.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree - Earned master's degree from an accredited institution in a field appropriate to supporting student success and initiatives
  • Driver License, Valid and in State
  • Three (3) or more years of successful administrative experience related to the duties and responsibilities of this position
  • Demonstrated knowledge of academic regulations, processes, and policies
  • Demonstrable management, problem-solving, and personal interaction skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a budget
  • Demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to supporting a diverse, multicultural community

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Student success/support experience in a four-year college or university, preferably within the CSU.

University Driving Requirements

Positions that require driving for university business by using a personal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Driver’s license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a 12-month period (or any combination of 3 thereof) 3. Not have more than 3 DMV Points, if their license is Class C or, 4. Not have more than 5 DMV Points, if their license is Class A, B, or C with endorsements.
