What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Counselor - Maternity Leave Position position at Calais School?
The Calais School is a state-approved provider of special education for students with special needs. The school serves students in grades K through 12 Plus with multiple learning disabilities. We have the need for School Counselor to cover a Maternity Leave and to work during our Extended School Year program providing therapeutic support to our students.
Responsibilities:
- Assist teacher providing thereapeutic support to students with behavioral issues.
- Work with the Counseling Team to develop strategies to help students cope with school pressures.
- Work with the Counseling Team to develop strategies to assist students in coping with their disabilities.
- Support the Teaching Staff by working with students who are not cooperative in the classroom setting.
- Work with the Counseling Team to develop behavioral strategies to assist students struggling with their disabilities.
- Will provide daily and ongoing individual counseling from those students who need a time out, anxiety reduction, mood-regulation, or time to reset after an issue has been resolved with the student's therapist.
- Will provide in-class support for struggling students when possible.
- Keeps a record of all students entering the Counseling Center and their reasons for entry.
- Maintains contact with parents in order to help resolve issues.
Requirements:
- Master's degree in School Counseling
- NJ School Counselor Certification
- 2 years of experience working as a counselor with youth
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Empathy and sensitivity to others' needs
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Creativity, enthusiasm, and dedication
