DEFINITION:
 
Under general supervision, to provide lead work coordination for other Correctional Officers during an assigned shift; to supervise inmates at the County Jail, according to laws, regulations, and policies of the State of California and Calaveras County; to enforce Jail rules and maintain Jail security; to be responsible for the care, custody, and confinement of inmates; to oversee work details and leisure activities; and to do related work as required.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: 
 
This is the advanced working and lead supervision level in the Correctional Officer series. Incumbents are expected to coordinate the activities of other Correctional Officers and perform the full scope of corrections work.  Will have responsible charge of the Facility in the absence of the Lieutenant.
 
  • Provides lead direction, work coordination and training for an assigned group of Correctional Officers;
  • May have responsible charge of the Jail in the absence of the Correctional Lieutenant;
  • Assists with evaluations of staff work performance;
  • Checks work areas to insure that inmates are working on assigned projects;
  • Assures that cells, facilities, and grounds are kept sanitary;
  • Supervises periodic block security checks and cell searches;
  • Maintains discipline among inmates; Investigates crimes and incidents within the Jail;
  • Responds to inquiries regarding inmate detention and Jail policies within the constraints of Department regulations;
  • Receives and reviews surety bonds for correctness, legality, and appropriate costs before releasing prisoners to the custody of bond makers;
  • Makes felony arrests; testifies in court and before disciplinary boards;
  • Investigates inmate grievances and reports of crimes; interviews suspects and witnesses in preparation for criminal case reporting and preserves evidence;
  • Receives and reviews jail incident reports; distributes reports for follow up and continuation actions;
  • Serves in technical assignment areas such as inmate classification, inmate discipline review, and staff training;
  • Verifies computation of sentences, fines, and release dates;
  • Assists in planning, developing, and implementing departmental in-service training programs;
  • Maintains records of work activities; prepares employee progress reports;
  • May testify in court on assigned cases;
  • Directs and supervises personnel assigned to the county jail;
  • Directs and performs booking and releasing of prisoners;
  • Supervises the receipt and safety of cash and property; issuance and maintenance of inventory for clothing, bedding, and other necessary jail supplies;
  • Handles duties related to the assignment to cells and feeding and processing for release;
  • Assigns and supervises work to prisoners;
  • Supervises and trains staff in the documentation and record keeping functions, and other related jail-keeping functions;
  • Monitors inmate extradition orders and orders for removal of inmates to ensure timely court appearances, medical appointments and transportation to other institutions.
Knowledge of:
Laws, rules and regulations pertaining to jail operations, jail security measures and the custody and feeding-of prisoners, including book procedures; court procedures; principles and techniques of supervision and training.
 
Ability to:
Plan and supervise the operation and maintenance of a county jail; supervise and train staff assigned to jail; plan and supervise inmate feeding program; prepare reports and maintain records; interpret jail regulations to the general public; maintain effective discipline among prisoners; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.

Education, Training, and Experience:

Equivalent to graduation from high school and one (1) year experience as a Correctional Corporal or related Law Enforcement experience.
 
Possession of appropriate California driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles may be required; completion of a Jail Operations Training Course as prescribed by California Administrative Code, Title 15, Section 1020, Minimum Jail Standards; possession of advanced First Aid Card and C.P.R. Certification; successful completion of POST supervisory training course, within one year of appointment to the position; successful completion of a P.C. 832 course.

Salary : $85,259 - $104,790
