DEFINITION AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Under direction, coordinates and evaluates the activities and projects of assigned library programs; provides assistance to patrons in locating various resources and materials; plans and organizes program activities and orders program materials; and performs related duties as assigned.
Library Program Coordinator position is a paraprofessional library position responsible for coordinating specialized library programs such as Children, Young Adults, and Adult Services. Incumbents are responsible for identifying patron needs, developing and maintaining appropriate collections, promoting library services to targeted populations and planning events within budget parameters. Duties and responsibilities are carried out with considerable independence within the framework of established policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Supervises provision of a full range of reference and information services to patrons of all ages.
- Represents the library and participates in local and professional associations, groups, organizations, committees, and meetings.
- Participates in the development and implementation of library goals and objectives, budgets, policies and procedures, and interprets them to the staff and public.
- Analyzes library operational procedures and makes recommendations for improvement.
- Plans, develops, coordinates, and evaluates program, services, and projects for patrons of all ages; coordinates with other library divisions.
- Maintains records and prepares reports, computer data, special studies, and correspondence.
- Prepares publicity, displays and bibliographies.
- Performs reference and reader's advisory, cataloging, collection development, and programming for library patrons of all ages.
- Coordinates and schedules work of library staff and coordinates unit projects.
- Participates in the selection of personnel.
- Schedules, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff and volunteers assigned to the program.
- Works with employees to improve performance by setting individual and team goals.
- Fosters an environment of teamwork within the division and throughout the library.
- Ensures consistency of service standards.
- Resolves conflict among team members.
- Plans and conducts regular staff and/or committee meetings.
- Assists in the preparation, submittal, and administration of the annual department budget.
- Participates actively and personally in the delivery of outreach programs and services with the Bookmobile.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
Knowledge of program planning and implementation to include research, development, and evaluation methods that align with the library's strategic plans; ability to engage community partners, customers, and staff in the promotion of library programs; ability to lead Program Council meetings and coordinate training and development opportunities, related to programming and marketing of programs; ability to train library staff on program development; ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines at one time.
Skill and Ability to:
Ability to work within a team environment; Develop and apply library policies and procedures and other professional knowledge to the practical problems of the position; Analyze and respond to community interests and concerns regarding library collections and services; Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public in a tactful, courteous, and effective way; Supervise, train, assign, evaluate, and lead the work of professional, paraprofessional, and volunteer staff.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Master's degree in library science; one year of professional experience in a public library setting and one-year program development experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Possession of an appropriate California driver’s license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
