What are the responsibilities and job description for the PARAMEDIC position at Calcasieu Parish Police Jury?
This is the fourth level in the Health Services series.
This position is for night-time coverage of the inmate population at Calcasieu Corrections and Calcasieu Sheriff’s prison. Incumbent will be assigned to rotating 12-hour night shifts with primary area of duty in intake and other areas as needed. This is an independent roll requiring someone who is a self-starter, able to follow protocols/procedures, and able to make, communicate, and complete assessments on a variety of medical patients. Works directly with security personnel to ensure safe competent care of inmates from intake to discharge. (The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not require supervisory responsibilities of lower-level employees.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED), and two years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

- Provides pre-booking and post-booking assessments, support, and care from initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility or booked into system while maintaining thorough patient care documentation.
- Obtains information from inmates, performs exams, and determines nature, extent, or magnitude of illness or injury to establish emergency medical procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance.
- Communicates with professional medical personnel at emergency treatment facility to arrange for reception of inmates at medical treatment facilities.
- Administers prescribed first-aid treatment onsite according to established medical protocols.
- Applies splints; administers oxygen or artificial resuscitation; treats and bandages wounds or abrasions; and performs other basic life support procedures.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

- Valid Driver’s License as per State law or requirement.
- State Paramedic Certification; or
- National Registry Paramedic Certification
