Performs a variety of paraprofessional technical assistance for computer systems; assists in the acquisition of hardware and software; performs a variety of complex technical duties in the installation and maintenance of stand-alone computer system, servers, computer network systems and peripherals; provides assistance to computer users, and to provide technical support to the computer lab managers.

Essential and other responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Function: 

  • Installs, maintains, and upgrades assigned servers, computers, and related equipment.
  • Installs, maintains and upgrades college WAN networking components.
  • Installs, develops or modifies computer software to facilitate computer processes and meet user specifications; debugs and tests all programs; provides proper documentation for all changes.
  • Assists in training college personnel in the use of network hardware and software providing professional workshops and individual tutoring.
  • Monitors license agreements to ensure that copyright compliance for software installed on college equipment; provides proper documentation for audits.
  • Documents and records problems, solutions, programs and procedures for computer systems.
  • Responds to and answers complex questions of staff on computer systems, software programs, and related equipment.
  • Assists in the acquisition of computer related software, supplies and equipment by identifying the needs to accomplish proper support of college computer systems.
  • Maintains an accurate inventory of equipment and software in areas of responsibility.

Marginal Functions:

  • Serves on college committees, attend staff development and training programs and support college functions.
  • Researches and implements new developments, products and techniques available to provide positive growth for college computer networks and related systems.
  • Participates in professional development activities and required employee training.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

This position description covers the most essential functions and duties associated with this position. The President or appropriate supervisory personnel may assign additional duties. Knowledge of:

  • Principles and procedures of computer network system installation and maintenance.
  • Office 365 Administration.
  • Server software; Windows and Linux preferred.
  • Methods, materials and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, testing and repair of computers and peripheral equipment.
  • Classroom equipment including audio visual, projection systems and smart boards.
  • Components and parts used in modern computer equipment.
  • Cable connections and currents.
  • A variety of computer software programs and programming languages.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

 

Ability to:

  • Install, test, maintain and repair networks and microcomputers and related peripheral equipment.
  • Troubleshoot software problems as required.
  • Prepare and maintain work records.
  • Analyze complex needs and requirements and translate them into appropriate, efficient processes.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations of the department.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

 

Environmental Conditions:

The employee should have the ability to effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve an office and classroom workspace, working closely with others, and periodically working irregular hours. 

The employee must maintain the office and teaching environments by maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring overall cleanliness, functionality, and conformance to OSHA standards to provide a safe work environment. 

Physical Conditions:

Physical and marginal functions require the ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following; standing, walking or sitting for extended periods, moderate lifting and carrying, reaching above shoulder, general manual dexterity, operating assigned equipment, and extended exposure to computer screens. 

The employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, reading and writing, operating assigned equipment, communicating with others, and handling varied tasks simultaneously. 

Additionally, the employee must maintain mental capacity, which permits making sound decisions and using good judgment, demonstrating intellectual capabilities, and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and personnel.

Scheduling Conditions:

This is a full-time, 12-month position, which requires the employee to be on campus or at an approved alternate location for at least thirty-six hours per week, Monday through Thursday, 8:00am-5:00pm, and Friday, 8:00am-12:00pm. This position generally works daytime hours, but has the potential for occasional evening or weekend hours.

Traveling Conditions:

Local travel between the Caldwell campus, Watauga campus, or any off-campus sites may be needed. Out of state travel is limited, but may be required for training and conferences.

Experience: 

Minimum two years of prior experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of modern servers, computers, networking components, and related peripheral equipment required. CompTIA A , VMWare, or Microsoft certifications preferred.

Training:

Associate degree with major course work in computer programming, information systems, engineering technology, database management or a related field required.

Salary : $38,221 - $44,592
