JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Certified Pharmacy Technician
DEPARTMENT: Pharmacy
REPORTS TO: Pharmacy Manager
POSITION SUMMARY:
- The Pharmacy Technician performs duties in the pharmacy and in the hospital.
- These duties involve ordering, receiving, preparing and distributing pharmaceutical products.
- Performs medication order entry.
- Appropriate and accurate record keeping is essential.
- Accountable for the delivery of consistently high quality work during assigned shift.
- Functions under the supervision of the Pharmacy Director.
- Accountable for the effective, efficient and safe operations of the Pharmacy ensuring that the objectives of the Pharmacy department and the organization are met.
- Ensures appropriate organizational and patient safety practices are in use.
- Promotes good public relations through contacts with patients, practitioners, visitors, employees, peers and the public at large.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Reads and interprets physician’s orders and does medication order entry.
- Prepares medications for proper dispensing. This includes unit dosing, filling and labeling of medications for distribution and logging in unit dose book.
- Orders pharmaceuticals via purchase order from appropriate vendors and contracts.
- Advanced problem solving capabilities and theoretical/technical knowledge are essential.
- Processes purchase orders and requisitions.
- Helps with inventory and inventory control.
- Returns pharmaceuticals to appropriate vendors for credit.
- Maintains floor stock supplies of pharmaceuticals and plain IV fluids accurately.
- Prints unit dose labels and IV fluids accurately.
- Prints unit dose labels and IV fluid stickers using the computer.
- Delivers pharmaceuticals to appropriate units in the hospital.
- Maintains crash carts and does unit inspections as scheduled and on demand.
- Maintenance of appropriate logs – controlled substance, unit inspection, refrigerator temperature, etc.
- Prints daily restock sheets and pulls medicines for Pharmacist approval, and then delivers and stocks carts.
- Compounds IV in Luminar airflow head and performs weekly cleanings and glove changes.
- Performs monthly medication out of date inspections and removes from stock as needed.
- Maintains a clean, safe working environment.
- Assists in maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
- Assists in maintaining departmental reports and records as directed.
- Assists in implementing department specific goals and objectives in keeping with overall Pharmacy and organizational goals and objectives.
- Assists in maintaining adequate and effective communication between Pharmacy and ancillary departments for problem solving.
- Interacts with others (on the phone or in person) in a positive, professional and appropriate manner.
- Works cooperatively with others. Has respect for and an understanding of the contributions of all team members.
- Attends required meetings and participates in educational programs.
- Protects patient confidentiality by promoting appropriate staff communication practices.
- Works shifts as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION
High School or equivalent
PREFERRED EDUCATION
Certified Pharmacy Technician
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
0 – 6 months working in all areas of Pharmacy.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
1 – 2 years working in all areas of Pharmacy.
