Job Description
Job Title: Security Officer I
Department: Security
Reports To: Security Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Job Summary: Patrol the zoo grounds and parking lots, provide assistance to zoo visitors and staff, assist in the training and supervision of seasonal parking lot attendants, respond to emergencies, and observe/report unsafe or unsecured conditions in order to ensure that zoo visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience and a safe and secure environment is provided for zoo animals and staff.
Job Duties/Responsibilities: include the following but others may be assigned.
- Act as a liaison with the public by providing friendly and courteous assistance. Enforce zoo rules, regulations, and polices in a positive and customer friendly manner.
- Patrol zoo building, grounds, and parking lots and monitor/ control vehicular traffic and parking in order to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for zoo visitors.
- Assist other departments with safety/ security related issues in order to provide for public safety as well as a safe and secure environment for zoo animals and staff. Perform courier duties as assigned.
- Complete daily report and any other required reports on assigned shift. Communicate incidents to supervisor/ manager as soon as possible. Reports all safety / security related issues.
- Responds to all emergencies as assigned, providing assistance to visitors and/or zoo staff.
- Assist in the training and supervision of seasonal parking lot attendants.
- Responsible for opening and/or closing procedures.
- Assist visitor services office staff as assigned. Responds to all lost person searches and calls for first aid assistance.
Job Qualifications:
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duties satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and/or Experience:
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED), two years customer service experience and one year security related experience.
Language Skills:
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Fluent in Spanish is preferred.
Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Must exercise excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Friendly and helpful customer service skills.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Registered Security Officer with Texas Commission on Private Security
- Valid Texas Driver License
- First Aid/CPR Certified
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to interpret and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving a variety of concrete variables in standardized situations.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must routinely drive a company vehicle both on and off company premises.
