What are the responsibilities and job description for the On-Call Mail Courier position at Calhoun County of Michigan?
Under the direct supervision of the Operations Manager, ensures the efficient handling of County mail. Picks up/delivers interoffice and outgoing mail pieces between County offices located in Battle Creek, and Marshall and United States Post Office (USPO). Processes outbound mail daily.
- Drives a daily scheduled mail route to Marshall, and Battle Creek to deliver/pickup and sort interoffice and outbound mail pieces.
- Prepares and processes outgoing mail pieces, including certified, restricted delivery, international, express mail and UPS packages.
- Operates and maintains an electronic postage meter machine. Includes placing service calls when necessary.
- Interacts and communicates with County personnel and United States Post Office personnel in order to answer questions and obtain information regarding postal rates and requirements.
- Completes and processes paperwork associated with the County’s and USPO mail processing systems via use of computer and printer.
- Picks up and delivers County payroll to County Buildings when applicable.
- Drives and maintains County vehicle for Mail Services, including cleaning interior and exterior of vehicle and scheduling general maintenance.
- Picks up and delivers court files to the County court systems in County Buildings.
- Responsible for taking all metered and pre-stamped mail to USPO for same day processing.
- Acknowledge the sensitive and confidential nature of such information and agree not to divulge any confidential information to others.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of Postal regulations for First Class mailings is recommended.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with County personnel and USPO.
- Mental ability to frequently handle simultaneous projects requiring concentration and attention to detail with periodic distractions due to people and/or business-related telephone calls. Incumbent is frequently required to handle pressures related to meeting deadlines, fulfilling scheduling requirements, etc.
- Physical ability to frequently transport items including lifting, pushing and/or pulling items weighing up to seventy pounds. Incumbent is occasionally required to climb, stoop, bend or kneel to accommodate different working positions. Incumbent is frequently required to walk and/or stand for extended periods of time.
- Possession of a current State of Michigan vehicle operator’s driver’s license.
- Work includes frequent outside working conditions with exposure to extreme hot or cold weather conditions, including rain and snow.
- Daily travel between County Buildings is required, including inclement weather.
- Extended work days (beyond eight hours/day) are rarely required.
- On-call availability to handle emergencies/crisis situations.
