What are the responsibilities and job description for the Project Engineer position at Calhoun County of Michigan?
- Prepare plans and specifications for federal, state and local road and bridge construction and maintenance projects in accordance with federal, state and county standards.
Utilize computer aided design (CAD) and related software packages for creating maps and analyzing data for projects and programs.
Utilize geographical information system (GIS) and related software packages for creating maps and analyzing data for projects and programs.
Utilize MDOT inspection software, specifications and various MDOT forms. Monitor inspections of road and bridge construction projects to ensure necessary compliance.
Monitor records and documentation of construction projects.
Utilize Asset Management software such as RoadSoft and GIS.
Assist the Director of Engineering in the development of short- and long-range construction and improvement projects and submit recommendations to the Managing Direct for review.
Assist in preparing the Certification Book, Act 51 reports and road classification changes.
Review and verify all petitions required for abandonment.
Assist in preparing grant applications. Additional document preparation may be required to include environmental assessments, engineering studies and reports, requests for proposals and correspondence.
Utilize survey information, codes, specifications, and input from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to develop and design road, bridge, and drainage construction and maintenance projects.
Prepare and coordinate permit applications from regulatory agencies (e.g. EGLE, DNR) for projects and maintenance activities.
Assist the Deputy Director with drainage and construction projects as necessary.
Attend meetings and conferences and review publications and technical journals to keep abreast of new engineering methods and techniques.
Review construction plans and proposals to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and county specifications.
Assist with managing all traffic counting operations and team members.
Assist with conducting PASER ratings for the county road system.
Assist the Director of Engineering with the preparation of bid specifications, as needed.
Monitor supplies for the Engineering Department and order materials as needed.
Perform various other engineering tasks as assigned.
- A bachelor's degree in civil engineering (or a related field) is required.
- Successful completion of the "Fundamentals of Engineering: (FE) exam is required
- Experience in civil engineering, construction inspection, surveying, design, drafting, etc.
- Possession of a valid driver's license is required
- Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies.

- Will be required to work independently.
- Occasional travel may be required.
- Combination of a normal office environment and routine field/onsite work conditions with occasional discomfort due to heat, dust, noise, and rough terrain.
- Extended workdays are occasionally required.
- Will occasionally be required to list/push/pull/carry items weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Hazardous environmental conditions may be encountered in the field on job sites while reviewing road maintenance and construction operations.
- Indoor and outdoor work required.
- Valid Driver's license required.
