TITLE: SECONDARY TEACHER REPORTS TO: School Principal DEPARTMENT: Certificated CLASSIFICATION: Certificated Salary Schedule HOURS PER DAY: 7.5 WORK YEAR: 185 Days SALARY: Based on education BASIC FUNCTION Under general supervision, teaches one or more classes in subject matter of expertise and or electives to students in grades 7 through 12, assists in other school programs as assigned, and creates a flexible program and environment favorable to learning and personal growth in accordance with each student's ability. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include but are not limited to the following. Other duties may be assigned. •Teaches knowledge and skills in subject area to secondary students utilizing the course of study prescribed by the District approved curriculum. •Teaches the State Standards. •Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt curriculum to the needs of the students with varying intellectual abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities. •Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district. •Develops lesson plans and appropriate instructional aids. •Develops and uses instructional materials suitable for verbal and/or visual instruction of students with wide range of mental, physical, and emotional maturity. •Communicates with parents through a variety to means. •Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays such as bulletin boards, interest centers, etc. •Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems. •Develops and uses instructional materials suitable for verbal and/or visual instruction of students with wide range of mental, physical, and emotional maturity. •Holds parent conferences to discuss the individual student progress and interpret the school program. •Develops instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration and working time. •Develops a balanced curriculum/instructional program involving appropriate activities designed to encourage pupils to develop skills, draw conclusions, achieve improved interpersonal relationships. •Demonstrates subject matter concepts using models, chalk board, over-head projector and other standard or teacher prepared instructional aids. •Designs learning activities that will relate the subject matter to the physical world. •Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior required to provide an orderly and productive environment. •Instructs students in proper care and use of materials and organizes storage areas and controls use of materials to prevent loss or abuse. •Evaluates each student's performance and growth in knowledge and understanding, and prepares progress reports. •Exhibits proper conduct in the handling of student emergencies. •Selects and requisitions instructional materials, books, etc., and maintains inventory records. •Diagnoses the English language needs/abilities of pupils and selects or develops the appropriate materials and uses appropriate instructional strategies to fill the needs. •Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and/or in self-selected professional growth activities. •Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator for evaluation in conformance with district guidelines. •Collaborates with other staff to build a positive, effective school-wide learning environment. •Utilizes the results of interim and benchmark assessments to determine instruction, intervention and remediation for students. •Communicates with parents and school counselors and student progress. •Participates in school-wide supervision of students during out-of-classroom activities. •Plans, coordinates with and supervises instructional aides, teacher assistants and other paraprofessionals. •Participates in faculty and/or District committees and the sponsorship of student activities. •Performs other duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job functions satisfactorily. Credentials: •Valid California Credential or license authorizing service in grade levels and areas assigned Or Eligible for and Internship credential. •CLAD or equivalent. BCLAD preferred. •NCLB qualified. Education: •Bachelor's degree, including all courses to meet credential requirements. Experience: •Student teaching, internship, or full-time teaching experience. Personal Characteristics: •Appearance, grooming and personality which establish a desirable example for students. •Above-average recommendations from student teaching supervisors and other professionals who have observed the characteristics, scholastic attainment and classroom performance of the teacher. •Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. •Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. •While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. •The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms. •The employee is required to speak and hear to give and receive directions and be understood. •The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. •The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 75 pounds. •Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. •The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but in some subjects may be high. •While performing the duties of this job in some subject areas, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock.
