CLASS TITLE: LIFEGUARD/SWIM INSTRUCTOR
BASIC FUNCTION
Under general direction, perform lifeguard duties, ensure the safety of patrons by supervising the activities of
swimmers in and around the pool, and assist in teaching swimming techniques.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Maintain a constant and close surveillance of persons in and around the pool; enforce safety rules and
regulations and maintain order in the pool area.
Administer first aid, react and employ established American Red Cross techniques to rescue persons as
necessary.
Maintain accurate daily records of pool temperature, chlorine and chemical levels, and assist with class
attendance records.
Perform light maintenance duties on the pool and grounds to maintain a clean and safe pool area.
Instruct swim school classes and assist with swimming instruction as directed. May be required to work a
varied schedule, which may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Employees will be required to
wear a uniform while on duty.
Knowledge And Abilities
KNOWLEDGE OF
Principles and methods used in teaching swimming.
Lifesaving and methods of accident prevention.
Standard techniques of resuscitation and other first aid measures;
Swimming pool sanitary regulations and their use.
Swim instruction techniques.
ABILITY TO
Exercise personal judgment and maturity.
React quickly and calmly in emergencies.
Monitor the activities of swimmers.
Communicate effectively.
Establish and maintain positive working relationships.
Successfully pass initial and follow-up tests of safety and pool procedures as well as successfully complete
backboard drills and CPR reviews.
Licenses And Other Requirements
Must be at least 16 years old.
American Red Cross certification including Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR cards.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to react quickly to save a life or lives in
water emergency situations; pull people out of the water; administer first aid; and lift and/or move up to 100
pounds. The employee will work outdoors in variable weather conditions.
