LOS GATOS-SARATOGA JOINT UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT POSITION DESCRIPTION Class Title: Custodian Basic Functions: Under general supervision, to follow a schedule in the performance of custodial duties required to maintain assigned rooms, equipment, buildings, and adjacent areas in a clean, orderly, and secure manner; and to perform all related duties as assigned. Examples of Duties: Working from a prepared work schedule, sweeps, scrubs, waxes, and polishes concrete, linoleum, tile, and wood floors. Vacuums, spots, and shampoos rugs and carpets in offices, faculty rooms, auditoriums, dining rooms, cafeterias, hallways, ramps, and stairways. Washes, cleans, and dusts windows, railings, walls, furniture, tables, benches, woodwork, hall lockers, and other equipment. Erases and cleans chalkboards, vacuums chalk trays, and cleans erasers. Picks up paper and other refuse in buildings and on grounds. Sweeps walkways, entrances, and adjacent blacktop. Washes, scrubs and disinfects restrooms and shower rooms. Cleans and polishes metal work such as door panels and hand railings. Empties and cleans pencil sharpeners and waste containers; may haul by vehicle to appropriate area. Receives goods and picks up and delivers supplies, mail, and money. Replenishes supplies in offices, workrooms, and restrooms. Lights and turns off room heaters and hot water heaters as needed. Locks and unlocks door and gates, raises and lowers flag, operates night-lights, and checks doors and windows for security. Assists in moving or rearranging desks, chairs, tables, furniture, and other equipment. Replaces light globes. May make minor repairs and installations. Makes adjustments in classroom furniture. With appropriate help, replaces yard and gym lights and moves and sets up bleachers. Cleans roofs, gutters, and drains. May perform routine groundskeeping duties, including sweeping blacktop with hand and power sweeper. Maintains equipment used in the course of work. Reports damaged buildings, broken equipment, and safety, sanitary, and fire hazards. Takes turn in setting up for and covering special events. Assists in the thorough cleaning and restoration of a school plant during school vacation periods. May, under supervision, assist in the operation of school heating plant and pool maintenance. Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of: Methods, materials, and equipment used in cleaning various types of surfaces and furniture. Basic safety practices related to cleaning methods. Ability to: Maintain work schedules in performing tasks. Perform light to moderate manual labor. Work without immediate supervision. Understand and follow a work schedule. Maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Education and Experience: One year of work experience, preferably including some custodial work, or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities. Physical Demands: Walking or standing for extended periods of time. Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or moving heavy objects. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
