Under general supervision, in a classroom setting or special learning center, an instructional assistant assists in the delivery of an instructional program of prescribed learning objectives to Special Education students.
POSITION IN ORGANIZATION

Specific Responsibilities
- Assists in guiding students or providing an example in the academic, social/emotional or psychomotor areas
- Assists in developing a student's communication abilities in the written, oral, or manual areas (receptive and expressive skill areas)
- Attends to a student's special needs in the physical or personal hygiene areas of growth and development
- Provides for experiences to increase a student's awareness and interest in vocational areas
- Assists in helping Special Education students understand their handicap and work towards improving their skills in areas where specific weaknesses have been diagnosed
- Assists Special Education students to become more self-reliant and to relate with individuals or groups who are not handicapped
- Assists teacher in the classroom and outdoor activities
- Prepares materials for reproduction and operates machines to reproduce such materials
- Prepares materials and uses media as needed in the classroom setting-
- Performs any other related work as required
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with teachers and parents
- Participates in workshops and in-services as required
- May be required to perform specific tasks as related to the I.E.P.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of full-time paid or two years volunteer experience working with Special Education Students, or two (2) years of college including courses on child development and education of the Special Education student.
- Must be physically fit to lead and participate in a variety of vigorous activities.
- Ability to see and hear conditions relating to the safety of self and others.
- Ability to speak in an indoor and outdoor setting well enough to project voice throughout classroom, playground and multipurpose room.
- Strength to lift/carry equipment/supplies/children up to 50 pounds.
- Must have adequate body movement or mobility to stoop, bend, reach and climb.
- Must pass proficiency test as legislated by the State of California.
- Must possess a California Drivers License and must submit to a Department of Motor Vehicle check as required
- Knowledge of the general needs and behavior of children in Special Education
- Knowledge of the basic element of child growth and development
- Knowledge of the procedures, functional and limitations of assigned duties
- Ability to deal effectively with children in situations requiring poise and patience
- Ability to perform clerical work
