Chief Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Law Division
The California Department of Justice is hiring an experienced Chief Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Law Division.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Under
the direction of the Chief Deputy Attorney General, the Chief Assistant
Attorney General (CAAG) oversees and directs the staff and work of the
Criminal Law Division statewide. The CAAG is responsible for directing
and coordinating the complex trial and appellate litigation of four
major legal sections in five area offices (Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, Fresno, or San Francisco)
within the Criminal Law Division: (1) Appeals, Writs & Trials, (2)
Correctional Writs & Appeals, (3) Cybercrime, and (4) Special
Prosecutions. The CAAG is also responsible for direct supervision of the
Post-Conviction Justice Unit and the Division’s Executive Unit. The
position will also be responsible for assisting the Attorney General and
Chief Deputy Attorney General in the development of policy and
litigation approaches in criminal appeals and habeas corpus (state and
federal) in both capital and non-capital cases; high-profile and complex
trial matters; writs and appeals involving parole and conditions of
confinement; and review of officer-involved shootings under Government
Code section 12225.3. May act on behalf of the Attorney General, as
assigned, in meetings with legislators, department heads, court
officials and others. The CAAG will also supervise the preparation and
implementation of a large budget and will present budget matters in
front of the Legislature and agencies, as required.
Telecommuting
options may be available. While the position’s location is specified as
statewide, the candidate selected for appointment can be headquartered
in Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, Fresno, or San Francisco.
Regardless of the headquarter location, the candidate will be expected
to travel regularly to all of the Department’s main offices.
Required Qualifications:
Ability to direct the legal work, including litigation, in various areas of criminal law.
Ability to manage a large legal division comprised of lawyers and other professionals.
Ability
to provide assistance and advice to the Attorney General and Chief
Deputy Attorney General, on policy development, and to direct the
implementation of such policies in relation to criminal law.
Experience
preparing and/or managing a large program budget and ability to assist
in presenting the budget before the Legislature.
Practical
familiarity with trial and appellate court practices and procedures as
they pertain to criminal law in both state and federal court.
Demonstrated
leadership, planning, and supervisory skills, and the ability to
interact positively and effectively with multi-disciplinary
professionals.
