What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Health Medical Administrator I position at California Department of Public Health (CDPH)?
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is currently hiring for a Public Health Medical Administrator I within our Center for Infectious Diseases’ Division of Communicable Disease Control. In this role, you will serve as the Branch Chief of the Infectious Diseases Branch (IDB), who is responsible for conducting surveillance, investigation, control, and prevention of many important infectious diseases in California. This includes, but is not limited to, botulism, coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever), foodborne, waterborne, vector-borne, zoonotic, and emerging infectious diseases.

We are looking for someone that possesses broad and extensive administrative and leadership experience as either a Board-eligible or Board-certified physician in a public health program, preferably in infectious diseases.

Responsibilities:
- Oversee surveillance, investigation, and data analyses of over 50 infectious diseases and their outbreaks and provide epidemiologic support for local health departments in their management, control, and prevention of IDB diseases and outbreaks
- Serve as the management lead for IDB communicable disease issues as they relate to, and impact other CDPH Centers, Divisions, and Offices (CDOs) including, but not limited to, the Administration Division, the Center for Environmental Health, the Center for Healthy Communities, the Center for Laboratory Sciences, the Office of Communications, and the Office of Legislative and Governmental Affairs
- Provide strategic direction in Branch, Division, Department, and healthcare and community partnership meetings, facilitating a collaborative work environment to build program synergy and integration
- Serve as CDPH principal authority on the technical, administrative, and legal aspects of surveillance, investigation, control, and prevention of IDB diseases; provide consultation to state agencies, local health departments, private providers, and others to ensure consistency with CDPH recommendations; and make recommendations on CDPH positions for proposed legislation related to IDB diseases, and on policies and regulations regarding control and prevention of IDB diseases
- Oversee health education and risk communication related to IDB diseases, annual surveillance, disease reports, IDB projects and research collaborations (e.g., the review and approval of associated communications, reports, and publications), and oversee scientific and general presentations of IDB diseases to local health departments, medical providers, professional associations, and community-based organizations
- Direct day-to-day Branch operations and administrative management, including a broad range of high-level issues, which may be complex and sensitive in nature (e.g., monitoring contracts and other expenditures; ensuring compliance with human resources, Equal Employment Opportunity, and other Department guidelines in hiring; staff and workforce development; supervision, employee evaluation, and progressive discipline; and other state administrative functions)
