ENGINEERING GEOLOGIST

Under the general direction of the Geosciences Unit supervisor, the incumbent reviews and evaluates the construction, operation, and maintenance of energy facilities and power plants for water supply, wastewater disposal, solid waste, water quality, and stormwater to assess the potential impacts to human health and the environment. The incumbent reviews sensitive project sites that may have issues involving soil and groundwater contamination, discharges to impaired water bodies, and depleted groundwater and surface water resources; responds to water quality, soils, or waste issues regarding power facility operations; and conducts investigations to determine if any violations of the program’s regulations, the Energy Commission’s conditions of certification, or the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) have occurred. The incumbent also conducts water resources, soil, and waste investigations, studies, and analytical evaluations that contribute to the Energy Commission’s policy and planning responsibilities.

Working Conditions

The CEC supports a hybrid workplace model with office-based and remote-centered workers. Limited in-person attendance and occasional travel may be required based on the needs of the division. Regular and consistent attendance is essential to successful performance. This position is remote-centered, which means the incumbent works 50 percent or more of their time from an alternate work location.

The CEC was established by the Legislature in 1974 to address energy challenges facing the state. Today, the CEC is the state's primary energy policy and planning agency and is leading the state to a 100% clean energy future. The California Energy Commission seeks an Engineering Geologist in the Geosciences Unit of the Engineering Branch of the Siting, Transmission and Environmental Protection (STEP) Division. Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
1. Knowledge of the Energy Commission’s Engineering Program as it pertains to powerplants.

2. Experience applying engineering principles and practices under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

3. Ability to represent the Unit in meetings and/or workshops with agencies, interest groups/public as well as public meetings, conferences and hearings sponsored by assigned Committees/Commission.

4. Excellent writing and editing skills.
