Organizational Summary

The mission of the California Immigrant Policy Center (CIPC) is to uphold the humanity of immigrant communities in California by transforming systems to achieve racial, social, and economic justice. CIPC is a non-partisan, non-profit statewide organization engaging in advocacy, organizing, and strategic communications to uplift immigrant communities. CIPC was founded in response to the 1996 passage of federal immigrant and welfare laws that profoundly affected immigrants. Today, CIPC advances inclusive policies that build a prosperous future for all Californians, using policy analysis, advocacy, and capacity building.


Over the past 28 years, CIPC has led groundbreaking campaigns that have greatly expanded protections for California’s low-income immigrant populations, as well as access to publicly-funded services and programs, including but not limited to the Safe and Responsible Driver Act, the TRUST and TRUTH Acts, CA Values Act, E-Verify Bill, the Health for All campaign, California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC), and One California, the largest investment in legal services protection in the country. 


 

Position Summary

The Campaign Director will be responsible for leading comprehensive strategic initiatives to advance CIPC's core campaigns across multiple policy areas, including detentions and deportations, health and public benefits, and economic justice as well as emerging areas such as climate, disaster relief, housing, and education. This role involves developing and implementing campaign strategies, conducting power analyses, and coordinating with the government affairs, policy, movement building, and communications teams. The position requires strong leadership skills to guide campaigns, foster coalition relationships, engage directly impacted communities, and provide technical assistance to various stakeholders while helping advance CIPC campaigns as well as developing the California Immigrants In Action 501c4 infrastructure. The Campaign Director will also play a role in mentoring staff and building up their campaign skills as they work collaboratively and model approaches to campaign strategy.


Travel across the State is necessary to maintain strong partnerships with local groups and coalitions, participate in legislative briefings, conduct technical assistance presentations, and attend key meetings and conferences with allies and stakeholders. 


The Campaign Director will report to the Deputy Director of Programs & Campaigns and will work closely with others in the organization on priority campaigns.

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Lead coordination, analysis, and implementation of strategy to advance priority campaigns by developing power analyses and tactics for campaigns in collaboration with government affairs, policy, movement building, and communications teams
  • Direct strategy of in-district advocacy in collaboration with the government affairs and movement building teams 
  • Guide the development and implementation of CIPC's core campaigns including necessary engagement on national efforts to protect and advance state and local campaigns
  • Advance advocacy campaigns across the areas of detentions and deportations, health and public benefits, economic justice, and other emerging areas including, but not limited to, climate, disaster relief, housing, and education
  • Drive justice reinvestment strategies, including research and partner engagement
  • Engage in budget advocacy across various issue areas including necessary engagement on national efforts to protect and advance state and local policy 
  • Provide guidance on strategies and tactics, including escalation plans on campaigns
  • Help develop, track, and evaluate progress of campaign goals and objectives to measure success and impact 
  • Lead key events such as legislative briefings on behalf of the policy and campaigns department in partnership with Government Affairs
  • Work closely with local groups and coalitions in the area where the Campaigns Director is based to support their work and to advance CIPC’s campaigns 
  • Engage directly impacted people and key partners to support CIPC’s campaigns
  • Establish sound working relationships with community-based, multi-organizational coalitions on priority issues and campaigns
  • Support relevant departments on key CIPC programs and initiatives like Immigrant Day of Action & Conference, Regional Capacity Building Project, Town Halls, Candidate Forums, etc.
  • Help lead the development of the California Immigrants In Action 501c4 infrastructure, campaigns and partner engagement 
  • Conduct media advocacy to advance priority campaigns 
  • Conduct technical assistance presentations on campaign strategies and priorities to service providers, community organizations, legislative staff, local governments, philanthropic partners, and the media 
  • Attend meetings, conferences, and events with allies and other key stakeholders on behalf of CIPC
  • Manage and develop the leadership skills of staff members
  • Support fostering a healthy team culture and work environment at CIPC
  • Assist with fundraising activities
  • Support the development department by tracking deliverables and programmatic activities supported by grants and other giving
  • Other projects and duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Minimum of ten years of experience in policy advocacy, budget advocacy, grassroots organizing, and/or campaign work;
  • Minimum of seven years of supervising experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate campaign and advocacy strategies;
  • Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights, racial and economic justice, and has an equity mindset;
  • Knowledge of state laws and programs;
  • Familiarity with California legislation with significant impact on immigrant communities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, particularly with staff, partners, and community-based organizations;
  • Ability to speak publicly about immigrant rights and the impact of federal or state legislative changes on immigrant communities;
  • Demonstrated success working collaboratively across internal teams and with external partners, particularly in coalitions and on statewide legislative, budget, or other advocacy campaigns;
  • Demonstrated ability to balance interests among a wide range of organizational or community stakeholders and build common cause;
  • Track record of working with ethnically, linguistically, and racially diverse communities; direct experience working with immigrant rights organizations and community-based groups in California strongly preferred;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, Presentations, etc.); and
  • Proficiency in non-English languages spoken by Latinx, Asian, Pacific Islander, African, Caribbean, and Middle Eastern communities is a plus.


Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range: $110,000 to $120,000 annual, commensurate with skills and experience.


CIPC is a unionized workplace and is represented by Immigrant Advocates United-United Auto Workers.  This position is not in the bargaining unit.
