Policy Coordinator, Detention & Deportation
Location: Any city in CA


The mission of the California Immigrant Policy Center (CIPC) is to uphold the humanity of immigrant communities in California by transforming systems to achieve racial, social, and economic justice. CIPC is a non-partisan, non-profit statewide organization engaging in advocacy, organizing, and strategic communications to uplift immigrant communities. CIPC was founded in response to the 1996 passage of federal immigrant and welfare laws that profoundly affected immigrants. Today, CIPC advances inclusive policies that build a prosperous future for all Californians, using policy analysis, advocacy and capacity building.


Over the past 28 years, CIPC has led groundbreaking campaigns that have greatly expanded protections for California’s low-income immigrant populations, as well as access to publicly-funded services and programs, including but not limited to the Safe and Responsible Driver Act, the TRUST and TRUTH Acts, CA Values Act, E-Verify Bill, the Health for All campaign, California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC), and One California, the largest investment in legal services protection in the country.


Job Title: Policy Coordinator
Location: Any city in CA (Hybrid Position)
Term: Full-time, occasional evening and weekends required
Position Status: Exempt
Pay Range: $69,020 - $71,106 annual, commensurate with skills and experience.
Reports to: Supervising Policy Manager, Detention & Deportation

POSITION SUMMARY

The Detention & Deportation Policy Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating one or more of CIPC’s campaigns, coalitions, and/or projects that advance the goals of the Detention & Deportation (D&D) policy portfolio:

  • Disrupt and divest from policing, detentions, deportations, carceral institutions, and surveillance
  • Dismantle the criminal legal system in favor of systems of social support and accountability rooted in community and healing
  • Limit and end all forms of local and state entanglement with federal immigration enforcement
  • Reduce overall contact between communities and law enforcement
  • Combat the criminalization of immigrant and refugee communities as well as Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities


The Policy Coordinator will communicate and collaborate with CIPC’s Policy, Government Affairs, Movement Building, and Communications Departments as well as key partners across different regions of the state to work cohesively toward shared advocacy goals. They will support the D&D Supervising Policy Manager and other CIPC staff in tracking and analyzing policy developments in this policy area.


This position may be based anywhere in California. Occasional travel throughout California is necessary.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate coalitions and campaigns led by CIPC, including: facilitating coalition calls/meetings, maintaining relationships and communication with coalition members, and sustaining active participation in campaign activities
  • Facilitate internal and partner meetings to develop campaign strategies and tactics
  • Execute a robust field strategy around CIPC’s campaigns, including: leading constituent meetings with elected officials’ offices and administrative agencies, identifying and preparing directly impacted spokespeople, planning grassroots mobilizations such as community education events, direct actions, press conferences, call-in days to elected officials, social media advocacy, etc.
  • Represent CIPC in coalitions and stakeholder spaces not convened by CIPC
  • Write and disseminate fact sheets, e-blasts, social media content, and other written materials as needed
  • Act as a resource for and provide trainings and technical assistance to coalition members, partners, and other stakeholders on relevant topics within the D&D policy area that affect immigrants
  • With support from D&D Supervising Policy Manager, track and analyze state legislative and budget proposals related to the D&D policy area


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in immigrant rights, civil rights, public policy, community organizing, social justice, and/or civic engagement
  • Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights, racial and economic justice
  • Experience facilitating and engaging broad coalitions
  • Experience planning and facilitating effective meetings, workshops, trainings and community events
  • Experience coordinating or supporting the successful completion of projects or campaigns at the city, county, state and/or federal levels
  • Excellent written, oral communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in non-English languages spoken by Latinx, Asian, Pacific Islander, African, Caribbean, or Arab communities a plus
  • Track record of working with ethnically, linguistically, and racially diverse communities. Experience working with immigrant rights organizations and community-based groups in California preferred
  • Ability to travel on short notice
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle or alternate transportation is required, as this position requires driving
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, Presentations, etc.)
  • The D&D Policy Coordinator reports to the D&D Supervising Policy Manager, based in Los Angeles.


COMPENSATION & BENEFITS


Salary Range: $69,020 - $71,10/annual, commensurate with skills and experience.


CIPC is a unionized workplace represented by Immigrant Advocates United-United Auto
Workers. This position is in the bargaining unit and is covered under the terms of the
collective bargaining agreement. CIPC provides a comprehensive benefits package to its employees:
