Basic Function:
The Rector will be the spiritual and administrative leader of the PLTS community. Under the direction of President, the Rector is the President's primary representative for the seminary with external constituencies in the church and in theological education circles. The Rector is active in relating to donors and seminary alumni including the invitation of their financial support. Along with the Dean of the Seminary, the Rector represents the seminary within the structures of the university and is accountable to the university for the administration of the seminary. The Rector embodies the mission and spirit of the seminary as its symbolic leader and model.
Representative Duties:
Working with the University President (meet once per month), provide leadership and administration of the seminary and foster a collaborative environment with students, faculty, staff, and other administrators.
Develop short-term and long-term plans consistent with the mission of the seminary, the mission of the university, and the university's strategic plan, to grow enrollment within a fiscally responsible environment.
Represent the seminary to the church and other external constituencies, including the ELCA Seminary Leaders.
Foster relationships with partners such as the Western Mission Network, Churchwide Office of the ELCA, and ecumenical partners to advance the mission of the seminary and enhance theological education in the ELCA.
Provide direction, coordination, and recruitment for the work of the PLTS Advisory Board as a committee of the Board of Regents.
Bridge internal university-seminary dynamics, foster cohesion, and address siloed structures
Work closely with the Academic Dean to promote sustainable development goals in all academic areas: foster academic excellence through intellectual growth, student-centered learning, and faculty development.
Explore and develop innovative educational programs (e.g., certificate programs) responsive to church and societal changes.
Enhance institutional management, student experience, and retention; facilitate graduate offerings and theological education for the church through the seminary
Raise funds for the seminary, in cooperation with the Director of Seminary Stewardship and University Advancement.
Oversee and host public seminary events such as the annual Founders' Day, Luther Lecture, and ELCA Bishop visit.
Serve as a pastoral presence, guide, model, and promote values of the seminary, pluralism, interfaith cooperation, and mutual understanding of identities and cultures among its students, faculty, staff, and advisory board.
Facilitate effective communication within the seminary community, including times of crisis.
Advance the concerns of the university and represent the seminary among the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) Board to promote the sustainability of PLTS; serve as ex-officio member of the GTU board.
Oversee the seminary staff.
Oversee and monitor the seminary's operating budget.

Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination equivalent to: A master's degree in divinity, Religious Studies, or Theological Studies and seven years of experience in a congregational or ELCA leadership setting (campus ministry, outdoor ministry, social ministry, synodical ministry, Churchwide ministry, seminary or higher education).
Preferred Qualifications:
Distinguished record of administrative leadership gained through increasingly responsible roles in complex settings
A Ph.D. in Divinity, Religious Studies, or Theological Studies
Licenses and Other Requirements:
On roster of ordained ministers of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America by time of appointment
Physical Abilities:
Detect to understand appropriate written correspondence; operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer; communicate to exchange information in person, in writing, on the telephone and by email; stationary position for extended periods of time; move or transport light objects; position self to store and/or retrieve files
