MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate degree in Historic Preservation, History, Art History, Architectural History, or a closely related field, with coursework in American architectural history AND
At least three years of full-time professional experience in the field of architecture, urban planning, or historic preservation; OR
Bachelor’s Degree in Historic Preservation, History, Art History, Architectural History or a closely related field, with coursework in American architectural history AND
At least five years of full-time professional experience in the field of architecture, urban planning, or historic preservation.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Under general direction, the Associate Architectural Historian plans and supervises the work of lower-level staff in the areas of historic preservation; or without supervising responsibility, plans and carries out studies independently. Duties include but are not limited to :
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS / DUTIES
Work as an internal project team leaderCoordinate with clients and state and federal agenciesCoordinate with third party consultants and professionalsPrepare scopes, budgets, and schedules for medium-sized projectsAttend pre-proposal meetings for prospective projectsAttend interviews for prospective projectsMay act as a primary contact with client on small projectsWork constructively with other Architectural Historians, interns, and volunteers in conducting historical resource surveysManage scopes, budgets, and schedules for assigned projectsRepresent GPA at professional events, conferences, and workshopsPrepare national, state, and local landmark applications with minimal supervisionPrepare historic context statements with minimal supervisionPrepare CEQA and Section 106 compliance reports with minimal supervisionPrepare HABS / HAER documentation with minimal supervisionPrepare Mills Act and Tax Credit applications with minimal supervisionPrepare design guidelines with minimal supervisionPrepare historic resource survey reports with minimal supervisionPrepare local preservation ordinances and programs with minimal supervisionConduct interviews and formal oral histories with knowledgeable individualsDefine study areas and areas of potential effects for CEQA and Section 106 compliance reportsDevelop survey and project methodologyApply the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic PropertiesPeer review architectural descriptions and statements of significance and integrityFinalize project reports and work productsPresent applications and findings at public hearings and meetingsKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Experience in the identification, evaluation, and documentation of historical resources.The ability to apply federal, state, and local policies, procedures, and programs related to historical resources.Knowledge in historic preservation theory and practices, rehabilitation techniques, and architectural history.Outstanding historical research, digital photography, historic architecture identification, and technical writing skills and oral communication.The ability to produce technical written materials that meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation and other federal and state review agency standards and guidelines.GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have a reliable mode of transportation, valid California Driver’s License, and Automobile Insurance and be a driver in good standing with the California Department of Motor Vehicles.Must be able to work effectively in a remote and / or hybrid workplace and to participate in video conferences.Must be organized and efficient with time management.Must be very flexible, willing to switch tasks often and maintain a high level of availability.Must have excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work well with all levels of internal management and staff, as well as outside clients, vendors, and friends of GPA.Must be trustworthy and follow directions.Must be available during GPA’s regular working hours.Must exercise good judgement when making decisions.Must exhibit strong business ethics.Must positively reflect the GPA brand.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and / or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and coordination including use of a computer keyboard.Must be able to drive for long periods of time.May be required to travel by air.Must be able to multi-task and work amid frequent interruptions.Company / Organization Description
