The Senior Civil Engineer plans, manages, and coordinates the engineering program. Using broad parameters of departmental policy guidelines, this position exercises substantial initiative, judgment, and expertise to meet program and project outcomes.
The Senior Civil Engineer creates the scope on large civil engineering projects with complex budgets and timelines, integrating numerous elements that require significant stakeholder involvement and sensitivity. This position provides direction and mentorship to more junior staff and oversees both technical and administrative work performed by their staff, ensuring that projects are completed efficiently and effectively for the public good. Responsibilities include informing the public and Board of Supervisors, selecting consultants, preparing contract documents, reviewing project plans and specifications prepared by consultants, and administering contracts during construction.
Qualifications :
Four years of increasingly responsible professional engineering experience. At least one year of the required professional experience must have included functioning in a supervisory capacity or managing a project that included directing the work of project staff and / or consultants. Registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers. In addition to a competitive compensation package, new, full-time, regular hire Senior Civil Engineers are eligible to receive a $10,000 signing bonus, which will be split into two equal payments : 50% at time of hire (i.e., first paycheck) and the remaining 50% after successful completion of their probationary period. The Department of Public Works has embraced a hybrid work schedule that considers that some duties of this position may be performed remotely.
