Job Summary

Under the supervision of the physician, Physician Assistant incumbent performs medical diagnostic and treatment in the fields of primary care/reproductive health and performs minor surgical care for California State University Long Beach (CSULB) students.

Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts. CSULB has been recognized as one of the Most Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs in 2024.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides primary & reproductive health care services: Adheres to the established hours of clinic operation by being on time and remaining on duty as scheduled unless approved by the Medical Director. Special activities may involve occasional coverage outside usual SHS hours.
  • Provides direct patient care for students with eating disorders: Performs intakes and assessments of students with diagnosed/undiagnosed eating disorders and/or disordered eating
  • Participates in SHS Committees, special projects, work related activities: Attends and actively participates in SHS meetings, committees, and team assignments, including but not limited to peer review, CQMI studies, medical presentations, medical records audits, training activities, outreach activities, service-related activities, preparation for Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) accreditation, and special projects as assigned by the Medical Director or Director of SHS.

Adhere to professional standards, policies, clinician protocols, and regulations established by Student Health Services. Complies with HIPAA Health Care Privacy and Security Law. Complies with SHS policies, procedures, and guidelines. Computer skills strongly preferred for health information technology. Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with university students and convey medical information. Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records. Experience working with a diverse group of individuals, providing professional service. Provides high-quality, evidence-based care services in accordance with the principles of professional practice and ethical conduct. Skillful and perceptive ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, related disciplines, and the University.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

Required:
  • Equivalent to an academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based physician assistant medical training program, and sufficient experience to independently perform the scope of practice identified for the position required.
  • Occasional evening and/or weekends based on operational needs.

Preferred:
  • Experience in eating disorder management strongly preferred.
  • History of BLS training and current BLS Certificate strongly preferred
  • National certification preferred.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) preferred.

Licenses / Certificates
Possession of a valid license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of California. If delegated authority to transmit medications, incumbents must possess and maintain a valid California transmitting number and a valid DEA number and certificate required.
  • Current and unrestricted Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Certificate.
  • Possess and maintain a valid CPR/AED certification.

    Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

    CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $6,712 - $12,952 per month.

    Benefits

    Excellent benefits through CalPERS (health, vision, dental), tuition fee waiver, generous vacation and sick leave, and 14 paid holidays each year.

    Time Base

    1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

    Duration of Appointment

    This is a temporary position for one year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

    Additional Information

    The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.

    A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

    Due to the nature of this position, current CSULB employees are subject to a criminal record check unless they have successfully completed a criminal background check through CSULB within the past 12 months.
