Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs / Dean of Students (AVP / DOS), the Executive Director (ED) is responsible for providing vision, leadership, and administration of Project Rebound, including the Student Center and programs focused on supporting formerly and currently incarcerated students holistically. The ED has primary responsibility for growing the Project Rebound portfolio of programs, services and initiatives centering the goals of eliminating inequity and cultivating cultures of care and belonging for formerly incarcerated students. The student population targeted by the program is culturally diverse, mostly first-generation, and historically underserved. The ED supervises and provides complete program oversight of professional and student staff members, including the Director, Outreach Coordinator, Housing Coordinator, ASC II, and 11 student assistants.

The ED is responsible for the overall Project Rebound budget, including program, stateside, auxiliary, and foundation accounts from multiple revenue streams. The ED forecasts budgetary needs, establishes priorities, allocates funds, and monitors expenses along with the support of the Director.

The ED serves as the principal investigator for internal and external grants and contracts, actively engages in the development of philanthropic fundraising and / or grant writing and reporting, and / or other development work that directly supports and enhances the score of opportunity for formerly and currently incarcerated students and staff.

The ED conducts staff performance evaluations of direct reports and develops onboarding for newly hired direct reports.

FLSA : Exempt (Not eligible for overtime compensation. This position is eligible for full benefits.)

Anticipated Hiring Range : $7,916 monthly - $9,166 monthly, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training

CSU Classification Salary Range : $5,053 per month- $16,221 per month

Work Hours : Monday to Friday, 8 : 00 am - 5 : 00 pm. Hours may vary depending on operations. May include occasional evenings and weekends. Occasional travel within the state.

Project Rebound assists students to prepare, apply, enroll, and graduate with a degree from Sacramento State. Project Rebound provides educational resources and services for students looking to develop professional skills.

We work to transform those who were formerly incarcerated into scholars through counseling, mentoring, academic resources, and career development. We support students who are motivated to succeed by earning a high-quality degree from Sacramento State.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent from an accredited university / college or equivalent work experience. (Possession of additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis)

Experience

  • 3 years (minimum) leadership experience in higher education, community organization, or a comparable setting working with diverse communities or groups, and in a multicultural or diverse environment.
  • Managing budgets and personnel, including supervising professional staff.
  • Motivating and managing work teams to design, implement, and evaluate programs.
  • Demonstrated successful experiences in leading program direction and development.
  • Experience working with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
  • Experience navigating the court system.
  • Experience working with Youth Detention Facilities.
  • Developing, implementing, and evaluating programs.
  • Assessing programs (e.g. formulating and measuring student learning outcomes).
  • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Highly developed communication skills (written and verbal), in particular with diverse constituencies at all University levels, including faculty, students. Also, effective communication skills with community reentry partners, local, state, and federal officials from all branches of government, and donors.
  • Strong analytical skills and demonstrated knowledge of database management, budget, and strategic planning.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community.
  • Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to pass background check. Lived experience of incarceration and / or the legal system is not necessarily disqualifying for this position.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (master’s and / or doctorate) or equivalent from an accredited university in Educational Leadership, College Student Personnel, or a related field.
  • Experience in successful grant writing and fundraising.
  • Experience conducting staff performance evaluations.
  • Experience working with college or university faculty and an understanding of faculty governance.
  • Experience working with housing and career centers and programs, internally and externally.
  • Extensive knowledge of the history, policies, procedures, and impacts of the criminal legal system, as well as other ecosystems of criminal justice reform.
  • Lived experience of incarceration and / or the criminal legal system is considered an asset.
  • Ability to develop and manage academic programs designed to educate and engage students in matters of civic engagement and grassroots approaches to policy reform and democracy agendas.
  • Extensive experience in public speaking.
  • Ability to thrive in an environment of change, comfortable with ambiguous situations, a creative problem solver.
  • Comfortable working with adult correction facilities to create more bachelor degree level academic programming.
  • Experience working with juvenile courts, youth detention facilities, probation department and other stakeholders key to creating educational pathways for currently incarcerated juveniles.
