Position Summary

The Academic Advisor in the College of Business is responsible for counseling students on their educational and professional goals. Providing comprehensive advisement to prospective, new and continuing students requires (1) analyzing often complex and/or sensitive situations, (2) determining the student’s needs, and (3) deciding how they may best be met. The incumbent is also responsible for upholding and maintaining the high standards of the University and College’s programs. The Academic Advisor works independently in acquiring information, evaluating multifaceted concerns, and making decisions, which can directly determine the student’s successful completion of their program.


FLSA: Exempt (Not eligible for overtime compensation)


Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,540 per month (Anticipated hiring rate is at or near the minimum of the classification salary range)


CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,540 per month - $ 7,893 per month

Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 8 am - 5 pm; occasional weekends and evenings


Telecommuting Option: During the Academic Year, this position may be authorized to work up to 1 day per week from home. During Summer Hours, this position may be authorized to work up to 2 days per week from home.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities:

The following knowledge and abilities as well as those listed at the lower levels in the Student Services Professional series are required for appointment into this classification.

Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.


Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student‑related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.


Experience:

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.


Education:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related


Required Qualifications

Experience

  • Experience working with prospective, new, and continuing college students.
  • Experience reviewing student transcripts, and familiarity with articulation agreements desired.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Ability to apply high degree of judgement, persuasiveness, professional skills, and knowledge in working with student advising and admissions, as well as a general understanding of coordinated actions within the total Student Services program.
  • Familiarity with community college transfer students and experience working with target populations such as first-generation and probationary students desired.
  • Knowledge of basic academic advising procedures, activities and organizational structure of the College of Business and the University, or similar organizations.
  • Ability to use: PC, printers, calculator, copy machine, PowerPoint, Excel, word processing, internet/web-based programs/software.
  • Knowledge of computerized schedules, calendars, and student tracking and registration systems used in education settings.
  • Ability to act independently, maintain confidentiality, and work effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Strong written and organizational skills and ability to conduct group presentation required.
  • Ability to adjust approaches and techniques in the face of unpredictable responses and rapidly changing circumstances.
  • Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to travel and work early mornings, evenings and weekends as needed for special events.
  • Experience coordinating and conducting student outreach and recruitment events
  • Experience or familiarity with University academic and computing environments, e.g. Financials, Human Resources, Student records, and CMS.
