This is a full time Summer Internship based in Minneapolis, MN.
Calix is looking for an Optical Engineering Summer Intern to join our Hardware Engineering team. In this role, you will be part of a unique and award-winning internship program within the company. The program provides the opportunity to learn new skills through training and on the job learning. The expected duration is 90 days.
Across the country, fiber optic broadband services are becoming mainstream. Our fiber optic products and services are driving high growth in connected homes bandwidth capability (to 1Gbps!) as well as closing the digital divide across areas of the country currently being left behind in what is now essential. The strong strong push to make our connected lives the best experience possible is now, come join us and be a part of this once in a generation disruption.
In this role, you will help our Engineers make possible the higher speed broadband and robust availability we are achieving. You will learn what it takes to deliver optical communications directly to your home, creating a phenomenal user experience for the enjoyment of rich, immersive online presence at any moment for so many people across the country. You will complete your own summer project by planning, designing and implementing an automated optical switching tool that Calix will use to achieve our technology goals now and in the future.
This is an exciting opportunity for a rising Junior or Senior in an accredited four-year college or university on track to earn their degree in Electrical or Optical Engineering, with a strong desire to make robust commercial technology their life’s passion.

San Francisco Bay Area Only
27.60 - 34.50 USD Hourly
All Other Locations:
24.00 - 30.00 USD Hourly

Responsibilities And Duties
- Perform fiber optic performance test cases on state-of-the-art fiber to the home broadband network, documenting results.
- Assist Calix Optical Engineers in automating test equipment and procedures.
- Build test systems in engineering development lab working directly with Calix Engineering Team.
- Rising Junior or Senior in four-year accredited college or university on track to earn a degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or Physics.
- Knowledge of optical communications concepts such as fiber optic signal propagation, laser signal transmitter operation, signal to noise ratio concepts.
- Experience with test instrumentation desirable, including: Fiber Optic Power Meter measurement, Optical Spectrum Analysis, Bit Error Rate, Variable Optical Attenuation Bit Error Ratio, Variable Optical Fiber Link Length Bit Error Ratio. Optical Transceiver Extinction Ratio and Eye Diagram measurement. Authoring and integrating Python code for test equipment remote control.
- Able to coordinate your actions in a team-environment, delivering results in a fast-paced technology-driven organization.
- Knowledge of embedded systems software, by command line communication, is required.
- Knowledge of Internet Protocol a must. Programming experience with Python for scripting execution is also desired. Presenting experimental results in the form of lab reporting is also necessary.
- Able to work for the complete summer break (May - August or June - September).
