Job Overview
The Caloosa Humane Society Veterinary Technician position reports to the Clinic Manager and works closely with all clinic staff to ensure safe animal care and proper daily operations of the clinic. This staff must have a successful track record in customer care, animal care, and an interest in veterinary medicine.

Administrative

Animal Care
- Triage patients in lobby and on the phone to assess urgency of care
- Work with animals of all sizes and temperaments
- Assist receptionist in duties including but not limited to answering the phone, scheduling appointments, checking in/out clients as needed
- Assist veterinarian with patient exams: get weight on floor or tabletop scale, take history and vitals, discuss appropriate vaccines/diagnostics/treatments, prepare supplies for veterinarian, restrain animals for exams
- Assist in surgery: monitor anesthesia, prepare patients for surgery, perform post-operative patient care, perform dental cleanings
- Perform basic animal grooming including nail trims, ear cleanings
- Prepare, administer, demonstrate, and review medications
- Collect patient samples including blood, urine, feces
- Perform laboratory diagnostics including bloodwork, urinalysis, fecal flotations, and cytology
- Take radiographs as directed by veterinarian
- Follow infectious disease safety protocols
- Care for animals in treatment, including monitoring their eating and other habits, exercising them, etc.
- Assist with euthanasia procedure: place IV catheter, assist veterinarian in euthanasia process, prepare sympathy cards and bodies for cremation or home burial
- Complete Fear-Free for Shelters certification within first month of employment
- Maintain organized medical records - both paper and digital (Avimark software)
Customer Care
- Identify and work compassionately with clients in various emotional states
- Review prescription directions and demonstrate medication administration with clients
- Direct client concerns and complaints to clinic manager
Other
- Maintain clinic cleanliness including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning kennels, organizing shelves, wiping down surfaces, taking out the trash, cleaning up patient messes, wash,fold,and put away laundry, as directed by cleaning protocols
- Maintain clinic equipment as directed by maintenance protocols
- Support fundraising and educational activities as appropriate
- Restock/maintain rooms and treatment areas with necessary supplies
- Physical fitness: requires prolonged periods of standing and walking, kneeling both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Will be exposed to disinfectant solutions and possibly subject to bites and scratches while handling animals of questionable temperament. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to communicate with animals, the public, interns, volunteers, and staff. Must be able to lift a standard bag of cat litter/food (~50 lbs)
- Requires flexibility to readily adapt to a fast-paced environment
- Requires experience with Excel, Word, and Adobe Acrobat
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $15.00 - $20.00 per hour
