Job Overview
The Caloosa Humane Society Medical Director is responsible for overseeing all medical care provided to shelter-owned and privately-owned animals. As a non-profit organization, Caloosa Humane Society seeks a Medical Director that is committed to animal welfare and public health.
Key Skills, Responsibilities, and Duties
Clinical Supervision and Standard of Care
- Implement standard-of-care and spectrum-of-care in examining, diagnosing, and treating shelter animals as well as privately-owned animals
- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures at the clinic and shelter for examinations, diagnostics, surgical procedures, sanitation
- Work with the clinic manager to maintain inventory of prescription medications and non-prescription animal therapeutic products
- Manage online patient portals for prescription dispensation (chewyhealth, petmeds, ezpetrx, vetsource, etc.)
- Create and maintain relationships with mobile specialists (surgeons, internists, etc.) to provide advanced care at Caloosa facilities where possible
- Create and maintain relationships with outside referral facilities to match patient needs
Staff Development and Management
- Hire, train, mentor, and evaluate associate veterinarians
- Work with Clinic Manager to hire, train, and evaluate technicians and other support personnel
- Encourage continuing education and professional development opportunities by assisting in applications for educational grants
Strategic Planning and Business Development
- Collaborate with other staff and board members to develop strategic plans
- Identify and pursue opportunities for continued organization growth
Compliance and Regulatory Oversight
- Ensure Caloosa’s compliance with local, county, state, and federal regulations governing veterinary medicine and animal care
- Practice veterinary medicine in line with ethical standards and industry best practices
- Maintain accurate medical records, uphold strict pharmaceutical protocols, and adhere to environmental and safety regulations
- Oversee annual inspections of facilities and maintenance of appropriate operating licenses and permits
Client Communication and Education
- Create educational materials for current pet parents and prospective adopters
- Collaborate with community stakeholders such as local government and Animal Control officials to disseminate public health materials
Qualifications and Requirements
- DVM (or equivalent degree) from an accredited veterinary school
- Valid Veterinary License in the State of Florida
- Valid DEA license (or ability to obtain one)
- USDA APHIS National Accreditation
