What are the responsibilities and job description for the Career Services Advisor position at Calumet College of St. Joseph?
The Career Services Advisor will be responsible for supporting the educational and occupational growth of students by developing and delivering comprehensive student internship and career development placement services. This role acts as a supporting liaison between the educational institution, the students, and the employer partners to ensure that departmental, grant-based and strategic goals are met.
This is currently a grant fund position through September 2026, with intention to institutionalize at end of grant.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Provide support in the continued implementation of a viable internship and career placement program for all students, focusing on Hispanic students and students enrolled in our STEM and adjacent degree programs
- Facilitate student learning by assisting students in securing appropriate internships, practicum, student teaching, and other experiential learning opportunities to enhance overall academic experience and assist in post-graduate career placement
- Assist students, recent graduates, and alumni in developing skills essential to conduct a successful job search, including resume building, job interview preparation, portfolio development,
- Identify internship employers, solicit their involvement in the internship program, and maintain contacts with employers.
- Conduct site visits to evaluate the appropriateness and relevance of internships for students.
- Coordinate and administer aspects of the internship program, utilizing grant dollars as necessary
- Identify, develop, and monitor current internship sites, and connect and promote qualified students to employer partners
- Collaborate with faculty and student organizations to identify and promote tools and services related to career readiness and success
- Counsel and advise students in one-on-one career planning, career readiness, and career-related decisions.
- Plan and conduct student workshops and information programs.
- Design, implement, and administer recruitment programs for a diverse group of companies and organizations.
- Develop employer relations through verbal and written communications and membership in professional organizations.
- Support the collection and documentation of post-graduation student placement outcomes
- Counsel and advise students regarding employment opportunities through various employers.
- Assist with the planning, implementation and hosting of Career related events on campus including workshops, career and internship fairs, hosting employers and business partners on campus, and other.
- Assist with management of student data, pay records, grant documentation, and other clerical documents.
- Participate in professional development, training, conferences and other learning opportunities to continue to learn and grow professionally within the scope of the department and college’s work.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications for the position:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Proficient in the use of computers, including Microsoft Office Suite, etc.
- Excellent interpersonal and public communication skills, verbal and written
- Ability to speak and present information one-on-one and/or to small/large groups
- Ability to mentor students/graduates on job search skills
- Ability to maintain composure under stressful working conditions
- Strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit
- Strong organizational skills with ability to multi-task
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to be self-motivated and maintain initiative
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree preferred in Business, Educational Administration, Counseling, College Student Personnel, or related field required
- Prior work experience preferred in career services, workforce development, higher education, recruiting and/or student personnel services, or other similar experience
- Experience in student database programs such as Handshake, Empower, Slate, and other similar programs
- Bi-lingual in English and Spanish preferred but not required
