The Calvert Marine Museum is seeking a part-time, Exhibit Interpreter, as part of their Education Team. In this role, you’ll work directly with the general public and school groups facilitating engaging and memorable educational experiences in a variety of settings, including in the museum, teaching outdoors, and on our historic maritime vessels. You will work with your teammates to develop new and curricular-relevant programs around our collection which includes paleontology, maritime, and estuary biology. You will also play an important role in assisting in the planning of special events which celebrate the museum, its collection, and extend its accessibility and broaden its inclusiveness.Successful candidates will have strong written and oral communication. Excellent customer service skills are required. Teaching experience and maritime experience are pluses. Willingness to work and teach outside and in non-traditional settings is a must. This position requires an energetic, organized, creative, and upbeat person who enjoys working on a team, with children and a diverse audience.What specifically does an Exhibit Interpreter do?Assists with school tours, youth programs, adult programs, and special events, and plans and implements educational programs. Responsible for the security of the exhibits and the safety of the visitors. Conducts tours and programs on the lighthouses, oyster house, discovery room, marsh walk, small craft shed, and other Museum exhibits as needed. Works with educational programs including but not limited to field trips, summer camps, and outreach programs. Oversees security of the exhibits, conduct of visitors and general upkeep of exhibit areas.Leads or assists with school tours, youth programs, adult programs, and special events, and assists with planning and implementation of educational programs. Responsible for the security of the exhibits and the safety of the visitors. Position reports to technical supervisors. Essential Job FunctionsConducts tours and programs on exhibits at the Calvert Marine Museum and/or the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum.Works with Girl Scout overnight programs.Oversees security of the exhibits, conduct of visitors and general upkeep of exhibit areas. Other Job Duties (Duties listed are not intended to be all inclusive nor to limit duties that might reasonably be assigned.)Demonstrates maritime skills as needed.Performs related work as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre-employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions.)Knowledge of—Paleontology, estuarine biology, maritime history, and/or railway history.Ability to—Communicate effectively to large groups.Maintain neat appearance.Conduct tours.Climb steep ladders.Stand and walk for long periods of time.Deal effectively with the public. Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)Training and/or Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.Experience: Course work or six months experience in a related area.Licenses or Certificates: NoneSpecial Requirements: Subject to background investigation.Must be 18 years of age or older.Physical Demands: Requires long periods of standing, frequent walking indoors, repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching or reaching; recurring lifting of objects up to 49 pounds.Unusual Demands: Subject to work evenings and weekends.FLSA Status: Nonexempt Compensation Steps: Position closing date: February 4, 2025Pay rate: $25.25 - $27.04 per hourGrade 718, part-time position, 17 hours per weekCalvert Marine Museum Please Note: A complete application is required to be considered for a position within Calvert County Government.
