Calvert County is seeking a highly qualified individual for the position of Parks and Recreation Director.
This position is a highly responsible role in overseeing and managing all aspects of the parks and recreation department. Responsibilities include developing and implementing strategic plans to enhance recreational programs and facilities, ensuring the maintenance and upkeep of parks and amenities, managing budgetary allocations effectively, ensuring the continuation of accreditation with the Commission on Accreditation for Parks & Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), and collaborating with community stakeholders to address park and recreational needs. Additionally, the parks and recreation director will have strong leadership skills to lead a dedicated team, foster a positive work environment, and engage with the public to gather feedback. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for community engagement, strong organizational skills, and a proven ability to drive the success of parks and recreation programs.
Manages the Parks and Recreation Department including the County's natural resources, parks and recreation programs and facilities. The work involves planning, organizing and implementing park development, operations, and maintenance; operating and capital budgets; and recreation and sports programs throughout the County. The Director serves at the pleasure of the Board of County Commissioners.
Essential Job Functions/Other Duties/KSA:
Plans, directs, organizes and coordinates programs related to the planning, organization, and implementation of park development, operations, and maintenance and recreation and sports programs.
Manages and directs the operations and general maintenance of County parks and their associated recreational facilities, outdoor pools, an indoor aquatic center, a golf course, beach and campground, and community centers.
Evaluates the adequacy of existing recreation facilities, identifies and recommends replacements, alterations and additions to facilities, and coordinates modernization and new construction activities with architects, engineers, and horticulturists.
Provides leadership and direction for long-term projects related to land acquisition, major park and facility development, long range planning, and budget preparation.
Oversees implementation of community education and outreach programs which include a variety of initiatives.
Uses financial resources economically; develops and administers unit budget.
Manages positions and personnel to make best use of employees; recommends and/or selects employees; develops employees' capabilities; counsels employees and recommends disciplinary actions; enforces agency and County Personnel policies and procedures.
Provides leadership for a Park Board that includes volunteer members appointed by the County Commissioners.
Serves as liaison to the Calvert County Sheriff's Office for Parks and Recreation business.

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)
Training and/or Education:
Master's degree in park and recreation administration, public administration, or related field.
Experience:
Five years progressively responsible experience as a manager of a parks or recreation department which must include considerable experience managing staff, daily operations, customer service and policy development and implementation.
Licenses or Certificates:
Valid driver's license.
Certified Park and Recreation Professional
Special Requirements:
Operation of County owned vehicle.
Subject to background investigation.
Unusual Demands:
May be required to work beyond normal scheduled hours.
