POSITION:
HEAD START FAMILY RESOURCE WORKER 2


LOCATION:
As assigned by the Program Coordinator or Grant Manager


POSITION SUMMARY:
The Head Start Family Resource Worker is responsible for initiating and maintaining regular (at least once weekly) and long-term (up to two years) contact/support with families. This activity will occur primarily within the family’s home and be intensive (each visit should last for at least one hour). The interventions should be family-centered and strength-based and directed at establishing a trusting relationship; assisting in strengthening the parent-child relationship; assisting parents in improving their skills to optimize the home environment; improving the family support system; and increasing the family’s ability to problem solve and assume the role of advocate for themselves and their children. The activities may also include identifying and referring for contact/appointments at other supportive agencies, including health care appointments. The Family Resource Worker will also be responsible for assisting the family in establishing goals and a plan for accomplishment of the target child. They will serve as a liaison between home and school.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICIATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
These are pre-employment knowledge, abilities, and skills that apply to the Essential Job Functions. At the time of application, the candidate must have/be:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Related experience working with families.
  • Maturity and experience in successfully working with children and their families.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of normal child growth/development and parent-child relationships.
  • Ability to relate to families from a strength-based model, even in an apparently chaotic family environment; ability to approach families from a family-centered service model.
  • Demonstrates motivation and the ability to practice basic supportive skills.
  • Non-judgmental decision-making skills.
  • Creative and knowledgeable about community resources.
  • Enjoys and functions appropriately with long-term. Ongoing projects; does not need immediate feedback or results for personal validation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain personal/programmatic boundaries, while providing supportive services.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to individuals who may not share basic commonality, including value systems and behavior norms.
  • Believes in and is comfortable with advocating for nurturing, nonviolent discipline.
  • Experience in working with culturally diverse communities and families with the ability to be culturally sensitive and appropriate.
  • Demonstrates good writing and organizational skills.
  • Adheres to Head Start and Calvert County Public Schools’ policies and procedures.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.
  • Demonstrates success in accomplishing tasks akin to those responsibilities listed below.

Position requires significant periods of standing and walking and is performed in a typical school environment.

May be subject to a flexible work schedule, including working with families on an emergency basis.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
: Twelve (12) month position; $31.61 per hour; employment is contingent upon continued grant funding and need. If chosen for this position, the candidate must enroll in direct deposit. If selected for this position, the candidate must enroll in direct deposit.


FLSA STATUS
: Non-Exempt.

References must be directly related to educational experience and must include immediate supervisor.


State law requires that anyone hired after October 1, 1986, who will have contact with school children, must be fingerprinted and submit to a criminal background investigation. Federal law requires that a new employee must complete the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) in person before beginning employment. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a drug screen. Current employees of the Calvert County Public Schools are exempt from these requirements.
