POSITION
: CORE LEAD: SCIENCE


LOCATION
: Patuxent High School


POSITION SUMMARY
: The Science Core Lead teaches three periods a day, one of which must be a Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) Course (except where other factors may be considered based on certification). The Core Lead assists other content-specific teachers in improving student learning in Life Science and foundational learning courses. It is an expectation of this position to team with other Core Leads in their building and across the school system; to collaborate with content-area supervisors, the principal, and the CCPS Local Accountability Coordinator in delivering high-quality instruction to students, well-designed job-embedded staff development to teachers, and intervention and remediation programs for struggling learners. Core Leads also facilitate dialogue among teachers and lead student data analysis conferences. Core Leads are expected to attend bi-monthly meetings coordinated by the Central Office.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
:

At the time of application, the candidate must hold or be eligible for:

  • A professional teaching certificate from the Maryland State Department of Education in the appropriate field of education.
  • At least three years of successful teaching experience.
  • Satisfactory evaluations and demonstrated mastery of the essential skills of teaching.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS: (These are pre-employment knowledge, abilities and skills that apply to the Essential Job Functions.) At the time of application, the candidate must have:

  • Ability to work effectively with adults in a professional learning
  • Thorough knowledge of instructional strategies and content knowledge for specified HSA subject
  • Demonstrated skill in differentiating program and instruction to respond to the varied needs of
  • Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to students, teachers, staff, central office personnel, parents and community members.
  • Knowledge of the Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core Literacy Standards and Science, and STEM instruction.
  • Evidence of broad reading in professional literature and research related to subject area, learning processes, differentiation, and the change
  • Familiarity with technology as a productivity tool, a presentation tool, and an instructional
  • Familiarity with the unique learning needs of disaggregated student
  • Familiarity with both formative and summative assessment
  • Ability to collect and analyze student achievement data for instructional decision
  • Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks akin to the responsibilities listed

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND DUTIES:

  • Advocates for the school’s Science program, department, and staff.
  • Performs the duties of a teacher for the assigned number of periods, one of which must be MCAP or other foundational course, except in science where other factors may be considered based on certification and implements best practices in science instruction regularly in the
  • Coordinates and implements an intervention and remediation program for underperforming
  • Facilitates planning among teachers of core courses in data-driven instructional decision
  • Consults with building administration, as requested, regarding the science department schedule.
  • Fosters collaborative relationships and influences instructional practices among teachers of core courses and across the school.
  • Monitors the progress of the school and students on science assessment measures using system-wide data tools and works closely with the Supervisor of High School Science and STEM.
  • Monitors student progress on bridge plan completion and scores bridge plans from other
  • Assists staff in analyzing and using data from assessments to inform and improve
  • Develops and maintains high level professional development for staff in the designated subject area, differentiation, motivation, and other related achievement
  • Works collaboratively with classroom teachers to teach, coach, and/or model best practices in social studies
  • Provides support to individual teachers in designing specific programs for students needing additional help and in implementing the instructional
  • Plans and facilitates professional development at the county
  • Participates in and presents training workshops for staff, parents, and community members to enhance their understanding of science curriculum and instruction.
  • Collaborates with Supervisor of High School Science and STEM to support the assessment process to monitor student achievement and program
  • Assists the School Improvement Team in setting effective student achievement goals and
  • Works flexible hours as necessary to meet job responsibilities to teachers, underperforming students, and parents.

FLSA STATUS

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
: Ten (10) month position and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience applied to the current Calvert County Public Schools salary schedule for teachers. All employees are encouraged to have automatic payroll deposit.


EVALUATION
: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the policy on evaluation as established by the Calvert County Public Schools.


EFFECTIVE DATE OF POSITION
: School Year 2025-2026

References must be directly related to educational experience and must include immediate supervisor.
