EXTENDED SCHOOL YEAR (ESY)
INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT – SCHOOL BASED INSTRUCTION (Temporary)
Available positions include K-12 and Infant-Toddler (Birth – 5 years old)
POSITION SUMMARY:
Provides support services to help achieve a well-organized, smoothly functioning class and school environment in which students with disabilities can take full advantage of ESY instructional program. Assistant receives general direction from classroom teacher. It is anticipated that Calvert County Public Schools will need 20 Instructional Assistants.
REPORTS TO:
Director and/or Supervisor of Special Education
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
- Graduation from high school or possession of a general education development (GED) certificate.
- Experience working with children with disabilities preferred, particularly an interest in working with autism-spectrum students
DESCRIPTION OF SCHOOL BASED INSTRUCTION OF ESY SERVICES:
ESY school-based services are generally provided for special education students who need continuance of their regular school year program structure. Social interactions, behavioral supports, and language are typically emphasized, as well as individual student’s targeted objectives. Class sizes are approximately five to seven students, with one to two assistants assigned based on group needs. Classes meet for half-day sessions, four days a week (Mon-Thurs) – see specific information below.
SCHOOL BASED SERVICE DATES/LOCATION: Applicants interested in School-based Group Instruction should be available for the entire duration of the ESY services. These services will be held at a Calvert Elementary School and/or a centrally located school for 5 weeks.
Staff dates/hours:
- June 25 and 26, 2025 (Wednesday and Thursday - 8:15am - 3:00pm; Set-up/Planning/Prep)
- June 30 – July 31, 2025 (Mon-Thurs (4 days per week) – 8:15-11:15)
- July 31, 2025 (Thursday – 11:15 am - 3:00pm; Clean-up/Progress Reports)
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists the student(s) to whom assigned in such physical tasks as putting on and taking off outerwear, moving from room to room, and using the lavatory.
- Works with small groups or individual children to reinforce behavior and material introduced initially by teacher.
- Accompanies students to whom assigned when trips to the office or other areas of the building are necessary.
- Establishes a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the students while increasing student independence.
- Performs clerical duties, such as data collection, as assigned.
- Provides periodic class coverage in absence of a classroom teacher.
- Performs simple errands and tasks for students.
- Ensures that all activities conform to school system guidelines.
- Participates in training appropriate to assignment.
TERMS OF EMPLOYEMENT:
$20.94 per hour and position availability is contingent on student enrollment
