The Behavioral Health Community Health Worker Apprenticeship will launch in early 2025 as a partnership between the NYC Mayor’s Office of Community Mental Health, CUNY, Hostos Community College, and the Healthcare Careers Advancement Program (H-CAP), in collaboration with community-based Employer Partners. Upon successful completion, apprentices will receive a nationally recognized certificate as a Community Health Worker – Behavioral Health. This is an exciting opportunity to combine education, training and work with a potential path to continued employment.

What The Community Health Worker Apprentice Does:
During this ~6 month program, the Community Health Worker Apprentice will participate in two components:

Work component:

  • Work 3 days a week at CAMBA’s Brooklyn office under the guidance of a supervisor(s) and mentor(s).
  • Apprentices will gain experience in outreach, engagement and intervention strategies with Medicaid recipients experiencing chronic medical and behavioral health conditions, and a wide range of social determinants of health needs.
  • Conduct initial screening/intake/assessment of participants and needs.
  • In collaboration with participants, prepare initial and periodic revisions of service plans, including short-term and long-term goals and document progress via progress notes.
  • Assist participants in attaining their goals by identifying and locating community resources and by making referrals to appropriate services both within and outside CAMBA.
  • Work with participants to overcome barriers/goals, assist participants in advocating for themselves and in moving toward self-sufficiency.
  • Act as liaison and advocate for participants with referral sources regarding participant’s progress related to their education, healthcare, housing issues, etc.
  • Assist participants in completing applications (i.e., assist with gathering documentation) for benefits and entitlements (i.e., health insurance), process applications on participants’ behalf and follow-up to ensure enrollment.
  • May escort participants to appointments (educational, medical, social service, etc.) and act as translator if necessary.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Education component:

  • Take virtual classes with Hostos Community College for 6-9 hours/week.
  • Coursework will include foundational learning for community health, skill building in interpersonal relations, and a specialized focus on behavioral health.
  • Apprentices will be able to earn college credits for this Related Training and Instruction (RTI) coursework.
  • Apprentices will have additional opportunities to upskill or pursue a college degree post-program.
  • Apprentices will receive additional incentives to support their Related Training and Instruction (RTI) including: - $750 per course completed - Laptop - Books - Metro cards and gift cards.

Minimum Education/Experience Required:

  • Age 18 with high school diploma or GED

Other Requirements:

  • Able to engage with college-level coursework (9th –10th grade minimum reading level)
  • Able to commit to a near-full-time schedule for 6-month apprenticeship including ~21 hr/week with employer and ~9 hr/week in classroom.
  • Demonstrate having 6 or more months of full-time relevant experience prior to beginning the apprenticeship. Eligible experience includes work with government agencies or community organizations that provide public services such as:
  • Programs aimed at assisting community members in accessing resources and supportive services.
  • Initiatives that maintain partnerships with schools, community organizations, or other government agencies to promote health and wellness programs.
  • Examples of an applicant's relevant experience may include:
    1. Individual case management, mentoring, or group work: Providing support to individuals or groups to address specific needs.
    2. Community health or outreach activities: Supporting health and wellness initiatives and public education within local communities.
    3. Engagement with culturally and linguistically diverse communities and with historically marginalized groups.

Compensation: $17.00 hourly
When salary ranges are listed, the range would represent the low and high end for the applicable position & program. The salary offered would be based on various factors unique to each program and candidate. This includes but is not limited to experience, education, budget and/or program size, internal equity, skills and other factors that may be required for the position and organization.

Status: Part-time (21 hours per week for 6 month period) 3 days TBD within a Monday-Friday 9AM-5PM schedule while accommodating for class schedule.
