What are the responsibilities and job description for the SUMMER ENGLISH WRITING TEACHING POSITION position at Cambridge Housing Authority?
In partnership with the Cambridge School Department and the City of Cambridge Office of Workforce Development, The Cambridge Housing Authority Work Force’s Summer College Immersion Program (SCIP) consists of a weekly College Admission Essay Writing Workshop, and Math and English enrichment classes taught at a CHA location or college campus in Cambridge. Starting on Monday July 7, 2025, the program will run for six weeks and will enroll approximately 20 rising 12th grade CHA residents who have been identified by Cambridge Rindge and Latin School and The Work Force staff as motivated students who need help in strengthening their academic and their writing skills.

During the 6-week program, each cohort will meet with the Essay Writing instructor three times a week for one hour classes Monday through Wednesday from 10:30am-2:30pm. Additionally, the Writing instructor will have 4 hours of prep time a week and one hour on Wednesdays after the program ends for planning meetings, for a total of 17 billable hours a week.

Responsibilities
- Develop engaging lesson plans that break down the college application essay writing process
- Teach writing techniques to support the wide range of skills and abilities of the students.
- Coach students in developing essay topics.
- Provide one-on-one editing and group writing support, with the goal of helping students to complete their college admissions essay by the end of the six-week course.
Qualities
- Highly adaptable to meet each individual student’s needs in the writing process
- Ability to build trust in order to help students generate a personalized and effective college essay topic
- Create a creative space for students to engage in the writing process
Qualifications
- Experience teaching high school students, preferably junior or senior level writing classes
- Experience in teaching in an inclusive and personalized space where all writers, including students that face challenges with the writing process, are supported according to their abilities.
- In-depth understanding and mastery of College Admissions Essay strategies and the ability to coach and engage students through the writing process.
- Ability to teach as part of a team
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience and ability to connect with students from low-income and diverse backgrounds.
