POSITION DESCRIPTION
Secondary Maritime Science Instructor CGJROTC
REPORTS TO: Senior Maritime Science Instructor and Principals of Camden County High School & Camden Early College High School
PURPOSE: The Secondary Maritime Science Instructor (MSI) is an instructor in CCHS/CECHS representing the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and provides instruction to high school-aged students participating in the U. S. Coast Guard JROTC in subject areas relating to USCG operations, core values, history, missions, leadership as well as training in skills which are useful and appropriate as a foundation for a possible future in the Coast Guard.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Between structured classroom lessons, close-order drill, USCG unit field trips, and providing leadership and guidance to students, the MSI must be familiar and comfortable with various leadership, teaching, and learning styles.
- Be familiar with the current happenings of the USCG: operationally, administratively and in recruiting. The MSI will be the face of the USCG for many students who may have questions about various areas of the service. The MSI shall be well informed and provide accurate information to any interested student about the USCG and its accession programs.
- Be comfortable with and capable of contacting the commands of various local operational units that spread across all facets of the USCG to set up field trips and CCHS/CTHS visits on a bimonthly basis.
- Be familiar with the administrative process of the USCG with specific regard to submitting purchase requests.
- Understand and follow all policies and requirements of an instructor at CCHS/CECHS as set forth by the Camden County School District and its affiliates.
- Ability to speak and write effectively.
- Ability to use standard computer programs including FPD, Word, Excel, and e-mail.
- Knowledge of USCG terminology and correspondence procedures.
- As a retired member of the USCG, maintain uniform appearance in accordance with USCG regulations.
- The MSI and the supervisor, in consultation, develop the deadlines, projects, trips, training, and program milestones for which the MSI will be responsible.
- The MSI plans and carries out assignments; resolves conflicts that arise; coordinates with others; and interprets policy with respect to established objectives.
- The MSI keeps the supervisor informed of progress and potentially controversial matters, such as strong community opposition to the USCG JROTC, need for additional resources, need for repair or rehabilitation of property, or extenuating circumstances that prohibit the successful completion of program goals and objectives.
- MSI will be the instructor of a number of students who choose to participate in the USCG JROTC and has immediate influence on the students’ grades, assignments, development in the cadet corps, and knowledge about the USCG.
Physical Demands
- This position is primarily performed in a classroom and requires both sitting and standing.
- Must have a physical and medical fitness level that permits full participation in JROTC activities. This includes, but is not limited to, the ability to march for at least one hour, lift up to 50 pounds, and move boxes of curricular materials and other equipment.
- Walking, bending and demonstration of close order drill movements will be required when teaching students.
- Must possess the stamina to lead physical readiness training for a minimum of 50 minutes and able to conduct a full day’s training over a course of several days. Instructors must have the mental strength to deal with a moderate amount of stress.
- Must maintain weight and body fat standards in accordance with United States Coast Guard Regulations.
Requirements:
- Retired from the United States Coast Guard at a rank of E-6 to E-9.
- Must have an Associate’s Degree (or the ability to obtain one within 5 years) in any focus.
- Must have a valid NJROTC Instructor Certification OR be retired from the USCG w/in the last 6 years and be eligible to obtain a CGJROTC instructor certification.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 Months
