DEPUTY CONSTABLE (MENTAL TRANSPORT / TROPICAL TEXAS BEHAVIORAL HEALTH)

SALARY : $ 41,540.00 per year

SECTION I-JOB DESCRIPTION

This is a responsible non-supervisory position. Duties are to protect life and property. Duties will also include the serving of civil court papers, warrants of arrest and maintaining office records. Rural area patrol and assist local municipalities. This is NOT a Civil Service covered position. Will be assigned to the Tropical Texas Behavioral Health Office.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : ( State the fundamental duties and tasks )

  • To protect Life and Property
  • Serve court documents (citations, notices, summons, subpoenas etc.)
  • Keep daily records of papers served.
  • Serves as bailiff to courts of law.
  • To Enforce Federal and State Laws
  • Work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Operate an emergency vehicle.
  • Work during emergency crisis (hurricanes, floods, riots, etc.)
  • Patrol rural areas.
  • Assist with crime prevention.
  • Assist other officers or agencies.
  • Protect crime scene.
  • Investigate motor vehicle accidents.
  • Enforce Criminal and Traffic Laws (Citations, Warnings, Investigations, Etc.)
  • May be assigned to other related duties
  • Testifies in court as required by law
  • Arranges for removal, transportation and storage of confiscated property.
  • Arrest and incarcerates violators of the law.
  • Detains and transports prisoners as ordered by the court.

SECTION II- JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE : ( State the minimum requirements for formal education and job related experience.) High School Diploma or its equivalent. Two (2) years Investigative Experience Preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES : ( As utilized in the performance of the Essential Functions of the job.) Good working knowledge of Texas Penal Code, Traffic Code, Family Law and Juvenile Law. Good working knowledge of proper application of grammar skills, and ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing in English language. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing in the English language. Ability to work independent of direct, daily supervision, ability to analyze problems and develop solutions, ability to understand state and federal laws, rules and regulations as they apply to employee benefits programs. Have good working knowledge in the operation of a personal computer, typewriter, and basic office equipment. Ability to adjust to rapidly fluctuating situations, and multiple simultaneous projects. Working knowledge of laws pertaining to civil procedures. Skills in the use of firearms and security devices.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : ( Special licenses and other requirements necessary to obtain or retain the position.)

Must have a basic Peace Officer Certification from Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Must have a valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License and an acceptable driving record. Must have a Birth Certificate and a Social Security Number.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

Working rotating shifts. Subject to handling, sitting, walking, standing, bending, reaching and twisting to perform the essential job functions. Chasing and arresting violent subject(s). Physical requirements include lifting / carrying and average size person to either to be placed in a patrol unit or for safety. The ability to control emotions when confronted with disturbing crime scenes and or any situation that requires police attention.

SECTION III-JOB DIMENSIONS

CONTACTS :

Utilizes tact when dealing with Elected / Appointed Officials, Division / Department Heads, County employees, law-enforcement agencies, group health providers, and the public regarding departmental operational issues. When in contact with law-enforcement agencies, community leaders, and or community groups, must be treated with respect.

EXTERNAL CONTACTS :

Constant contact with the public, law-enforcement agencies and emergency personnel. Communication is primarily by telephone, radio and in person.

INTERNAL CONTACTS :

Constant contact with Elected / Appointed Officials, Division / Department Head, Co-Workers and other county Employee. Communication is primarily in person, via telephone, written memorandum and miscellaneous reports.

RESPONSIBILITY :

Deputy Constable job has a critical impact on the Constables and public image. Job responsibilities include constant dealing with the public. It also includes constant handling of confidential information / documents related to the job. Job requires that any and all crimes be reported.

DIFFICULTY :

Uses good judgment at all times. Judgment is required to ensure completion and effectiveness of the job performance to ensure completion of special assignments and special projects.

GUIDANCE :

Employee receives direction to perform essential functions. Employee develops unique solution for completing work assignment within the bounds of common law-enforcement and business practice.

This is not a Civil Service covered position.
