What are the responsibilities and job description for the Upward Bound Summer English Teacher position at Cameron University?
POSITION: The Summer English Teacher is reports directly to the Academic Advisor and is a part-time, temporary employee. The Summer English Teacher is paid a flat fee of $3,500. Teachers are assigned five classes during the May 27- June 27 session. Classes are 50 minutes long and student numbers range from 10 to 20 per class. Teachers are selected, hired, trained, supervised, and evaluated by the Academic Advisor. Teachers play key roles in the Upward Bound (UB) program, and their competency, reliability, and integrity are essential to the success of UB.
The primary responsibilities of the Summer English Teacher is to teach assigned classes during the summer component; prepare curriculum; develop instruction in accordance with the overall design of UB program objectives; prepare course syllabus, pre and post tests; prepare Progress Reports on each student’s progress at the end of the summer session; attend weekly faculty meetings during the summer program; maintain accurate reports of student attendance and academic performance of course requirements; arrive at all planned classes promptly, prepared, and appropriately dressed; establish rapport with students assigned to classes; report to, and keep UB Academic Advisor advised of student needs; accurately complete and turn in all required paperwork promptly; attend Awards Banquet and honor student academic performance.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: BA/BS degree in English, language arts or education. Experience with and knowledge of high school students. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to accurately complete and maintain academic records. Ability to develop and provide unique and creative classroom instruction. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with students, parents, and UB staff. Excellent organizational and time management skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: MA/MS in English, language arts or education; a valid teaching certification; prior experience with an Upward Bound or Talent Search program. Prior experience with disadvantaged youth. Preference is given to those who have succeeded in overcoming a disadvantaged background similar to program participants.
