About the Wilderness Program
The pride of Camp Chateaugay, our Wilderness Program is a unique outdoor experience designed to foster independence, leadership, and teamwork. This program, which has been running for over 50 years, offers campers an immersive outdoor living experience that includes extended adventure trips, survival skill development, and opportunities to lead camp-wide events.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and supervise campers (ages 15-16) in a rustic, electricity-free (ish) environment (cabins).
- Guide campers in cooking meals on wood-burning stoves, using lanterns, and managing daily camp life.
- Plan and lead three major five-day adventure trips (cycling, canoeing, and backpacking) throughout the Adirondacks and beyond.
- Provide outdoor education, including survival skills, environmental awareness, and trip planning.
- Act as a mentor and role model, fostering leadership and independence among campers.
- Assist in organizing and overseeing special camp-wide events such as Olympic Day and the 4th of July celebration.
- Ensure camper safety, enforce wilderness protocols, and maintain high standards of outdoor ethics.
Required/Preferred Qualifications:
- Must be driver.
- Experience in outdoor education, wilderness guiding, or camping leadership.
- Strong backpacking, canoeing, and cycling skills.
- Ability to lead and mentor teenagers in an outdoor setting.
- Able to complete First Aid & CPR certification & lifeguard training at camp once arrived.
- Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills.
- High level of enthusiasm, responsibility, and adaptability.
- Experience with meal planning and backcountry cooking.
- Knowledge of Adirondack Park, Vermont’s Green Mountains, or similar wilderness regions.
