Program Overview:

SummerKids is a weekly theme-based day camp for youth in 1st through 6th grade.  The camp at Bear Creek Elementary School can have up to 100 or more youth each week, separated into individual groups of 8-12 kids of a similar age.  The camp runs from 9 am-3:30 pm, with extended care options beginning as early as 7:30 am and ending by 5:30 pm.

All staff at SummerKids are invaluable members of our team who are role models, motivators, team builders, educators, and spark champions.  They facilitate emotionally and physically safe places, implement social and emotional learning strategies, and focus on creating a confidence-building summer for all our campers. At Summer Kids, we strive to create an environment where each camper and staff member has a sense of belonging, opportunities to share passions, and a place to thrive.

Position Overview:

The SummerKids Behavior Support Coach is an integral part of the Leadership team at SummerKids. The Coach will be present at SummerKids every day to support staff with youth who have higher behavior needs. As a support, the Coach may spend time with specific youth as they go about their day (activities, small group time, etc), offer advice to the counselors about how to interact with the youth, and follow-up with the youth themselves about how they're feeling at camp. The Coach will also facilitate time when staff can chat about youth behaviors they find particularly challenging in managing. At SummerKids, we provide weekly professional development sessions for staff; the Coach would work with the Camp Director to develop and lead a few behavior-focused sessions to help staff gain better skills in responding to behavior issues, including during staff training.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Proactively identify and address any behavioral support needs to ensure that the camp day runs smoothly for campers and staff. This could include responding to campers with big emotions, consulting and advising staff, and making suggestions for programmatic changes.
  • Manage a safe emotional space for youth through direct interactions with youth, staff and parents. This could include supporting staff who may be struggling with managing youth, talking to parents about challenging behaviors, working on behavior agreements with youth, or promoting a developmentally appropriate environment for social and emotional skills.
  • Oversee the Zen Zone, a space for campers to take time to self-regulate and have some personal space. This includes arranging and organizing the space to best promote usage.
  • Counselor support with behavior management, implementation of SEL skill building activities, and office hours.
  • Participate in professional development sessions throughout the summer.
  • Participate in planning and information sessions with the Camp Director prior to the start of summer (based on the Coach’s availability)

Skills & Qualifications:

Applicants who do not meet all of the qualifications listed below but present other relevant qualifications or experience will be considered. We strongly encourage anyone who feels passionate about this work, has a strong desire to grow their skills, and believes they have what it takes to thrive in this role to apply.

  • Camp Fire Values: Willingness to embrace and champion Camp Fire values of positive developmental relationships, cultural competency, and responsiveness and growth mindset
