Reports to: Food Service Manager

Classification: On-Call

Pay: $17 / hour 

Exempt/Non-exempt: Non-exempt

Organization Overview:

At Camp Fire Columbia, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to find and pursue their spark– a passion that inspires and drives them to set and achieve goals for their future. Founded in 1910, our comprehensive program starts with early intervention at the elementary level, bridges the learning gap for middle school, and helps students thrive and plan for bright futures during high school. During the schoolyear, Camp Fire works in partnership with dozens of schools in the Metro Area. During the summer months, we offer summer camps in the Portland metro area and at our beautiful 552-acre camp, Camp Namanu, bordered by the vibrant Sandy River and presided over by century old trees. Our programs directly serve over 4,000 kids ages 5-18 each year across a nine-county area, including programming in Clackamas, Multnomah, Yamhill and the greater Portland metro region. Position Overview:

This position is responsible for working as a member of the kitchen staff including washing meal prep dishes, assisting with food preparation, cleaning, cooking and other kitchen support tasks as needed. This is an on-call, temporary position for work during our rentals season from August to mid-November. Shifts vary and include working on holidays and occasional weekends as required. Shift times may vary in time of day and include AM shifts, mid-day shifts, and PM shifts. 

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. This role will come in contact with campers, families, visitors, vendors and employees. Each of these persons may have visible and invisible qualities that makes that person unique. This includes race, gender, age, sexuality, ability, religion, national origin, gender identity, and other identities. This role requires sustaining an inclusive and equitable learning and working environments by having respectful and considerate behavior, thoughtful and constructive speech to all.
  2. Fills in for absences on an on-call basis as well as working scheduled shifts for pre-planned absences of other kitchen members.
  3. Supports kitchen team with cleaning of kitchen and dining spaces including implementation of Covid-19 policies, inventory, and other kitchen support tasks as needed.
  4. Assist in food preparation and serving for each meal including main course, sides, baking, making salads, preparing the serving area for each meal, and filling condiment dispensers
  5. Unload and stack food and equipment deliveries.
  6. Maintain cleanliness and organization of dishes, kitchen equipment, workstations, and food storage areas. 

Job Duties:

  • Display excellent communication skills including presentation, persuasion, and negotiation skills required in working with coworkers, volunteers, families, and contractors; including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure.
  • Maintain a clean kitchen and food storage areas including but not limited to: wash counters, dishes, sweeps and mops kitchen floors, and other cleaning duties as needed.
  • Follows schedules set by Kitchen Manager.
  • Follow recipes and cooking instructions
  • Cleans floors, proper waste, and recycling disposal
  • Restock bathroom supplies, napkin dispensers, and condiments for dining and kitchen area
  • Unload and stack food and equipment deliveries
  • Properly clean and disinfect dishes and other cooking equipment as well as properly putting them away.
  • Communicates effectively with a variety of ages.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Has a high school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Willingness to learn new kitchen skills including but not limited to food prep, use of commercial dishwasher, and proper cleaning techniques. 
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, manages time efficiently, move with purpose & urgency, and proactively solve problems.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and follow instructions.

 
 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

This position requires a valid Oregon Food Handler’s card, and First Aid & CPR certification.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. In compliance with covid-19 protocols, employees may be asked to wear a face mask when not actively consuming food/beverage depending on current state standards.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather); work near moving mechanical parts; exposure to cleaning chemicals; extreme cold (non-weather) and extreme heat (non-weather). The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 
 

Temporary limited housing provided when scheduled during programming. Shared rustic housing kitchenette and shared bathroom with limited space.
