Seasonal Position: May-August. The Adventure Trip Counselor is responsible for the safety, well-being, and overall experience of campers participating in overnight canoe and backpacking trips. This role requires a passion for the outdoors, strong leadership skills, and the ability to create a positive and engaging environment for young adults. The Trip Counselor will work closely with Trip Leaders to plan, organize, and execute all aspects of the trip, ensuring a memorable and educational adventure for all participants.
Description
Responsibilities:
- Camper Supervision and Safety:
o Always ensure the physical and emotional safety of all campers.
o Enforce camp rules and regulations and address behavioral issues promptly and effectively.
o Provide first aid and respond to emergencies as needed (training provided).
o Monitor camper health and hygiene, and ensure they are properly hydrated and nourished.
- Trip Leadership and Facilitation:
o Assist Trip Leaders in planning and implementing daily activities, including canoeing, backpacking, hiking, and camping.
o Lead small group activities and discussions.
o Facilitate group bonding and teamwork.
o Promote a positive and inclusive group dynamic.
- Outdoor Skills and Education:
o Teach campers basic outdoor skills, including canoeing techniques, portaging, map reading, Leave No Trace principles, campsite setup, and wilderness cooking.
o Share knowledge of the natural environment, including local flora and fauna.
o Foster an appreciation for the outdoors and environmental stewardship.
- Logistics and Support:
o Assist with packing and organizing gear and supplies.
o Help with meal preparation and cleanup.
o Maintain and care for equipment.
o Transport campers and gear as needed (valid driver's license may be required).
- Role Modeling and Mentorship:
o Serve as a positive role model for campers, demonstrating enthusiasm, responsibility, and respect.
o Provide guidance and support to campers, helping them develop self-confidence, independence, and resilience.
o Address camper concerns and provide emotional support.
Qualifications:
- Experience:
o Previous experience working with youth in a camp or outdoor setting preferred.
o Experience in canoeing, backpacking, and camping is highly desirable.
- Skills:
o Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
o Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
o Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
o Ability to remain calm and handle emergencies effectively.
o Good physical stamina and the ability to hike and canoe for extended periods in various weather conditions.
- Certifications:
o Current First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
o Lifeguard certification is a plus. (or willingness to obtain)
